Was Day-to-day American life in 1996 closer to 2016 or 1976?

I mean culturally, in terms of customs, communication, transportation, diet, education, entertainment...anything.
Clearly this involves huge generalizations, but if you were a (insert occupation) in 1996 would life have been more similar in 1976 or 2016?
I say 1976 but it's pretty close. I was in high school in 96 so curious to hear from those who actually lived it.

1976. And we were much better off.

In 1996 I had the internet, access to a cell phone, email, video games and portable electronics. 1976 had none of those. 1996 fashions and dress are closer to current style than 1976 as well. Schooling is closer to 1976, diet can go either way.
2016. final answer.
2016. final answer.

Yeah I don't think that things are too much different than 96 for the aforementioned reasons

Good question. I'd say 1976. Cell phones and internet were around in 1996 but they weren't nearly as common as they are today and cell phones were only good for making calls. We still relied on payphones and you could still avoid people by simply not answering your home phone. I think music and fashion was closer to 2016 but our daily lives weren't that different from 1976.

How so?

1996 felt "funner" than now. IMO anyways.

The first mainstream Atari system actually came out in 76, but I agree with your post.

Today we have computers, cellphones, and the internet.
In 1996, we had computers, cellphones, and the internet.
In 1976, we had BASIC computers.
If you think of it majority of the stuff we have today are improved versions of 80's and 90's tech
Walkman -> Discman -> Ipod
NES -> Playstation -> PS4/xbox1
shitty looking all-in-one keyboard computers -> shitty looking beige computer -> sleek looking computers
brick cellphones -> less bulky clamshell flip phones -> smartphones

2016. You had the internet, cell phones, video games, 200 channels of cable tv...

Since most people lacked cell phones and internet access, life and culture was more like 1976. However, fashion, music, and slang was more like 2016.

Maybe my perspective is different because I was only 17 in 1996 but I knew one kid with a cell phone and two kids with internet at home (and we didn't even know what to do on the internet other than troll chat rooms). They just weren't really a factor in my experience but I'm sure older folks feel different. We did have a shite load of cable channels though.

I disagree. 1996 and 1976 were worlds apart. The only real difference today than '96 is the smartphone.
In 1976, people still had meals as families, lived in modest homes, worked on their own vehicles, etc. Drinking age was 18...

In 1976, we got our first tv. A 13" black and white. There wasn't cable in our area at that time, so you watched 3 channels which went off the air around 11-midnight.
It was closer to the 50's than the 90's

All that except for the drinking age applied to me in the 90's but I wasn't around in 76 so I won't try to argue with you.

That was my experience at 15. Yes, they existed, but nothing like today. The few people with cell phones who were not doctors or drug dealers didn't use them.
If you called a girl or even a friend you often had to speak to their parents first. If you met people out you needed to make a plan beforehand. If you were in an unfamiliar area you consulted s map.
If I were 22 maybe it would have been different.

It was like that in my area until 1989 or so.

Same here. Except for a year or so when I lived in an apartment, I didn't have cable til I moved to Alaska in 1994.

A teenager in 1976 had to steal his dad's playboys to see a nipple, or if he was from a baller family, he might stare at the squiggly lines on a scrambled TV channel and use his imagination. By 1996, the online porn revolution was well underway, ergo, 96 was closer to 16.
