The Orlando Sentinel put together a large photo gallary of old construction photos. Many of these haven't been seen before. Like the place or not, these are pretty cool.

I wish they'd expand the monorail.

Replacing is definitely the wrong word to use here. 20,000 Leagues had been shut down for over 2 decades.

The detail of disneyworld is truly amazing. Walt's OCD and lots of money made great things.

True, but it was a heartbreaking moment when I ran to the ride only to read the "Closed for Maintenance" sign.

It was costing more to maintain than all the other rides combined. And was often shut down for maintenance.

But it's because of this ride that they implemented work schedules for certain rides rather than waiting until issues came up on their own. For instance, splash mountain shuts down yearly, usually in late January.

If only Walt had lived for another 20 or so years, that place would be twice what it is today.

EPCOT would look nothing like it is now, that's for sure.

I went for the 1st te in 1980. Loved 20,000 Leagues. Was extremely disappointed when I took my kids and it was shut down. Really cool pics, thanks for sharing.

"Leaving the coast we crossed the wide reaches of the St. Johns River marshes to the charming inland town of Orlando"

From Wild America - about the 1953 trip of two naturalists who visit the wild places of the United States.

Well there was a 20 year gap with no ride there...

I want to say 20k leauges shut down in 1996 and Ariel just opened a couple of years ago.

Walt wanted Epcot to be a place were people lived.

The Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.

But the company figured it was better to make it like a permanent World's Fair. I agree, I think Epcot has always been my favorite park.

Yep, a much more dignified replacement.

Disney had way too many character meet and greet areas last time I went. We probably wasted half a day waiting in line for a few ten second photo opps.
