Despite raising hourly wages, Walmart still faces a series of aggressive protests about pay on Black Friday, one of the most important days for its recovery. Even if Black Friday has expanded into Thanksgiving and the rest of the holiday weekend, no retailer can do well without the individual day being strong. With shaky same-store sales, Walmart needs to pick up market share this holiday season.

On Black Friday, November 27, protests will take place from coast to coast outside of Walmart stores as workers and allies demand that the company increase wages and hours. The actions, at a dozen stores across the nation, comes on the heels of a more than two-week fast by 1,400 people, and numerous events by workers and allies demanding $15 an hour and full-time work so they have enough hours to provide for their families at a wage they can live on.

You're not supposed to be able to support a full family as a cashier at Walmart. These jobs are for supplemental income, old people, and college kids.

Exactly. These jobs aren't supposed to be a fricking career.

The same people will be bitching about Walmart raising its prices if this were to happen.

if you work in that industry, you know going in that you'll probably have to work BF, it will absolutely be insanely crowded, and your day will suck. That's part of the job.

Dont' like it? Dont' work there.

Exactly. If you want a job with livable wages, then get a job that actually requires skills and intelligence.

I've always wondered why they call it "Black Friday."

It is weird. When I was at McDonald's the pay wasn't great but OK for a part time job. Instead of complaining about working at McDonald I went to college and got a degree (and then a Master's ) and earned a better job and better place in life.

Amazing what ambition will do. If these people would actually do things to prove that they deserve 15$ an hour they might actually achieve that goal.

Wal Mart operates under a high volume, low margin business model. Each store is set up to make an individual profit of around $4 million a year. Raising their base wage to $15/hr would burn right through that profit and put each store in the red.

I pretty sure that most people asking for $15/hr minimum wage don't realize that the raise in pay with eventually mean the raise in cost of living.

Something has to offset that increase in expense for a business.

Not only that, but employee hours would be cut back. Hope these employees enjoy working 25 hr work weeks.
