I just thank you back

You think you're funny but you're actually acting like a petulant 13 year old punk who was not lucky enough to have a anyone to teach him the meanings of words like "respect" or "honor". Time to grow up.

Agreed.
Explain what makes you say this.

no problem, you're welcome, welcome (when feeling lazy)
ETA: not a veteran I just saw that...must be lazy right now

Fitting, since I'm only 12

You don't think I respect what General George Custer did for America? He really was one of the true heroes deserving of our thanks. If it wasn't for him, the people of Southern Montana would all be speaking Crow

Jesus, can you say "I'm a veteran" one more time?

What do people say if they served, but never deployed?
I have always thought of 'veterans' as combat veterans, but since 9/11 it seems like anyone who has ever served in any manner whatsoever receives the utmost respect and esteem.
I know someone who is just in reserves(AF I think, if he's still part of it) and has never spent a day outside of the country in a military capacity. I laughed when I saw someone tell him thank you today.

What branch did you serve in?

Goddamn it pisses me off when people decide who does and doesn't deserve their respect based off of no personal experience whatsoever. There are some trolling motherfrickers on this thread.

If I knew I was doing it for you I wouldn't have done it

As a DC resident, I see this happen all the time.
My understanding is that those in uniform don't really need it for motivation. But it isn't criticism either, so can be either awkward or reassuring depending on how you feel that day. No harm done, they know you're doing it mostly to make yourself feel good but who would object?

I humbled every time someone says this. Very thankful. When I get the opportunity I point out to them that my family (wife, two sons) are the true heroes. I do what I am trained to do. They are the ones who make the true sacrifices while I am away.
And for those individuals who have a sticker on their car saying their child or loved one serves, I take the time to say thank you. It is a sacred trust to lead them and I want them to know how thankful I am for the opportunity to serve with them.

Best answer in this entire thread!!!
I was never scared when I was getting deployed, I just worried about my family back home, worrying about me. Even though I said don't worry. Granted this was nearly 24 years ago, and I was not married or had kids.
