The story is that until 1942 US GIs could go to any Red Cross facility and get a free haircut, coffee and doughnuts. But in the middle of WW2 in 1942 the Red Cross started charging them for the doughnuts and the GIs were mad and the relationship that got soured then hasn't been repaired till now.

My dislike for the Red Cross has nothing to do with haircuts, coffee, or doughnuts.

My dad agrees with you. He is not a fan of the Red Cross.

Your dad is a smart man. The Red Cross is a criminal organization under the guise of helping people.

Can you elaborate? I've never heard this before.

They only distribute 3 cents for every $1,000 they take in.

I didn't realize npr did a story regarding their failure after Issac and Sandy. I was expecting articles from The Blaze to pop up, not NPR. It'll be hard to look at them the same way.

The Red Cross took in over $500 million for the Haiti earthquake. I was on the ground there, and I never saw anything from the Red Cross. All the aid came from us (Marines) and the Army and Navy. There were a lot of church groups there as well. I think there was something like under $80 million spent of that money on Haiti. The rest likely lined executives' pockets and paid for overly extravagant expenses paid trips.

There are other examples, but that is the most recent that I have personal experience with.

My Dad was in the National Guard during Hurricane Betsy and complained about how the Red Cross was charging for coffee in St Bernard Parish. He never got over it. For decades, whenever the Red Cross came up he would tell that story. Red Cross was total crap as far as he was concerned.

My dad served in Korea and he said that the Red Cross was charging service men for the items that were donated to be given to them. He will not support them in any way.

My dad was a WW2 Navy Vet he also hated the Red Cross, he said the only thing they ever received ship board during WW2 was a case of ping pong balls.

If you are looking for an organization that puts the money in the right place try The Salvation Army. They do a very good job of maximizing their dollars. I support them and do not give to Red Cross or United Way.

I also suggest donating local where you know the money is going. I'm a big supporter of Baton Rouge Food Bank and St Vincemt De Paul.

This reminds me, and I meant to start a thread on it:

If you have clothes or things to donate, don't bring them to Goodwill. The guys out back taking your donations are likely ridiculously lazy, or doing community service. I worked there for a couple of months during high school, and we threw away all kinds of useful shite cause they didn't feel like sorting it or moving it.

Kind of funny though, this old, really obese black man called Pat worked there. We got this super nice, basically brand new baby stroller in, and I asked where it went. He just takes a drag off his cigarette and goes,"In da frickin trash compactuh".

frick the Red Cross.

When I was a kid, a tornado hit our neighbor's house. The Red Cross showed up 10 mins before the news crew did, gave an interview, then left after the news crew did. I'll never give a dime to those POS's

The Red Cross used to give me hot lunches almost every day after Katrina. They were basically a mix of all kinds of things. One of my favorites was rice, corn, peas, and ground meat all in one bowl mushed together.

Other than that, I haven't seen them do a single thing

It was after 9/11 there was a huge controversy. Either Red Cross or United Way was keeping alot of money and misleading the donors. O'Reilly called them out on it.
