I am in the process of getting treatment for service connected issues. This is my first experience dealing with the V. A. and It took over a month to get my prescription filled with call after call in the process, with other additional issues as well. I am not wanting to talk ill of the agency, but would welcome advice as to dealing with them positively.

It's a great look at what happens when you turn healthcare into another govt bureaucracy. Unfortunately, many folks out there think it's the answer. Good luck.

It's a problem that's been going on for years. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do about it as long as the fed gov continues to run it.

Contact your congressman and then go shopping for a private insurance company. Obamacare(less) is enrolling now I hear.

What do you mean by to get a prescription filled? I have experience with them and anytime I have been given a prescription, I went right to their pharmacy and got it that day. Anytime you go for treatment and the prescribe something, you should go to their pharmacy that day and have it filled. Please explain the process and I might be able to help.

Then I will; they suck and the VA needs to be disbanded and all vets get Obamacare Platinum at no cost & no copays.......we'll save billions.

All vets should get free healthcare? That isn't a good idea. Not all vets deserve it.

I have the ability to use the VA as I have a rating and get disability but I use tricare instead because the VA is a little harder to deal with.

But I will say this...my father in law is currently battling cancer. And all he has is the VA. The type of treatment that he needed the VA hospital in Dallas didn't do. So they said find a place that will do it and we will pay them so that you can get it done. He just started treatment last week. My wife and I were shocked. She's an RN and knows the red tape and after hearing horror stories about the VA, I thought he would never get it started.

If you retired honorably or medically, the answer is YES

Those that got a bad conduct or dishonorable discharge I agree.

So someone that did 6 years in the national guard and never left the states, should get free healthcare the rest of their life?

It doesn't work like that. Retirees get tricare at a yearly cost of like 550 a year for themselves and family.

Veterans that didn't retire only get coverage for service connected issues.

I know exactly how it works. I was asking why a poster feels all vets that have an honorable or medical discharge should get free healthcare.

Because they earned it & when I enlisted in '79 I was promised it.

A guy that's been in for 6 yrs with no service connected disability doesn't....re-read my post.

I know people that retired from the national guard without ever deploying and only doing their weekend/at time. I don't feel they should receive free healthcare.

After rereading your posts, you stated all vets should get free healthcare. Then you stated if retired honorably or medically discharged by not the bad conduct stuff. You never mentioned service connection until now.

It's called luck dude.

My Dad was drafted in 1968-9. Got picked for field medic or corpsman training and then selected for corpsman. Spent his entire service getting fat on Japanese beer and learned how to smoke Marlboro reds. Just luck. He showed up when drafted. Everything else from that point on he had zero control of. He deserves VA benefits.

I'm not 100% sure about reserves or guard but a 20 yr retirement with no active service time is chump change. I bet their retirement check is gone after paying tricare. And they don't get they're retirement check til 60 years old.

Your scenario has nothing to do with 6 yrs in the guard doing nothing but drilling and at. He served active duty overseas. Totally different situation. Not all vets deserve free healthcare.

I don't think that person should get free healthcare. I am not saying they do, only that they shouldn't like another poster said.
