I can't understand why the USW doesn't make all workers walk out in every plant they have. They are already messing with 20% of their membership, why not go all in and make other refiners push for a settlement.

How often does decertification happen?

Not sure, I pushed to do this at the last site I worked at. Would have loved it.

Sorry for the dumb questions, just not familiar with actually occurs during a strike.
What is the general Union reaction when workers decertify? Do they attempt to intimidate those folks?

It is a vote. Both sides campaign. There are good and bad without a union. Honestly, apocalypse theory I have for doing away with unions nationwide is pretty bad. No one to defend workers rights is a bad thing in this country.

People are striking. They are funding a campaign to have their O/T opportunities reduced. ( smaller paycheck ) while making an unsafe work place another issue. These are the big " new issues " which have circled back around. Everyone nearly threw down their signs and formed a line into the plant when they learned they were not working because the USW wanted more contractors hired to be members. Whoa put the brakes on that one. Get back to working everyone to death in an unsafe place. You can play around with these bs all you want and take the financial hit to end up with less. No way can I support reducing o/t or support a lie about safety. People need to wake up and see they have been sold out.

The USW is a joke and people are sick of their bullying tactics. They have ruined the steel industry in the US. Why anyone would willingly be a part of this union is beyond me.

I think most don't.

I am too Type A to be part of a union. Letting other people dictate if and when I get to go to work would make me a mental patient.

Because there are no REAL issues to settle that required a strike.

I think this is what the sticking point will be when it comes to members voting for decertification.

Fighting for insurance or retrogression is one thing, striking for something that union members don't really care about is another. Granted, the union is dying and the members are just riding it to the grave at this point.

The unsafe work bullshite is a media tact all refineries a Chen plants are inherently unsafe. They want all workers to be USE the Maint folks and all. I don't thinknthey win this time they will take the short term loss and train a new non Union workforce.

Steelworkers strike: More labor board charges filed

quote:

The National Right to Work Foundation announced Wednesday that three employees at LyondellBasell filed unfair labor practice charges against the United Steelworkers Union.

The charges allege that union officials from Steelworkers Local 13-227 are harassing workers who are going back to work. The charges were filed Monday with the National Labor Relations Board, according to the foundation that is providing free legal help.

The foundation accused an unnamed local union official of making threats toward workers who continue to work during the strike. The group also alleges that union officials have allowed a union Facebook page to threaten union-represented employees who have gone back to work along with those who may be considering it.

Union officials did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

Late last month, LyondellBasell also filed an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB, accusing the Steelworkers union of harassing members who have returned to their jobs.

The company alleges in its NLRB charge that union representatives have threatened returning employees and used abusive language in social media.

I have also heard that Deer Park, Norco and Convent employees could also file the same charges against them.

That's par for the course. People have different ideas and opions about this issue. Work or strike will not agree on much. If you do not want to work ( support strike ) that is your idea of what is right for you. I respect that but do not understand it as expected. Because you want (and it your right ) to do what's right for you does not give you the right to force YOUR ideas and way of thinking upon me. All parties do what you have to do.
This is also why they have chocolate AND vanilla ice cream.

My experience during my 40 yr career at a global chemical company was that our USA union plants had the laziest, whiniest, argumentative workers in the entire company. Making any manufacturing upgrades at the union plants was like pulling teeth since the union was always pro for keeping the status quo and anti change. During my career those plants became the most inefficient and technological antiquated plants of all. We shut down those plants when possible in favor of the non-union plants where we added to the workforce.

IMHO unions, which once were useful for the working man, no longer serve a useful purpose and are now a cancer for the working man and US manufacturing. Instead of helping the working man they exploit the working man. It's about power as much as monetary greed. The decline in US union power during my career was well deserved and a welcome sight.

Are you at Convent or Norco? I'm giving them Monday to get this BS settled then I'm going back. Did you talk to HR or anyone or just go to work? Did you resign your membership beforehand?

Just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row when I go back and I can't seem to get in touch with anyone.

Norco.
Call HR and they will lead you in the right direction. I did resign my membership beforehand to avoid and future repercussion from the Union.
