It alters the position of the bar and can mess with your form too. I used one in high school but haven't used one since. Put the bar low on you back and you'll lift more and it still shouldn't hurt

"pussy pad" is what my S&C used to call them

I agree with that. seems like feeling the bar allows you to get in the right position.

People make fun of people that use it but I find people who mane fun of people that do have insecurity issues

That's what I've always heard them called.
To me, it would make the bar more likely to slide down your back

In this thread "nah bra that's for pussies"
In real life, most certainly do. It's more comfortable

I think it's funny that jacked up gym people will make fun of weaklings and ask why don't they lift bro, then when someone who may be just starting out in the gym to attempt to build their body uses the pad they get made fun of for that too. At least they're actually squatting instead of doing an hour of bicep curls.

nobody gets made fun of at the gym…just on the internet.

After suggestions from the board, I have been researching Starting Strength, the foam pad should never be used, if the bar is hurting your back. It's too high, the proper position should be lower. At least that's what I've read...lol
Eta: it does help not having the pad and making sure the bar is low enough,I'm a Rippetoe believer now

I like having a rough skin patch on my back. I remember when I used to not squat thinking it was just too uncomfortable. Now that I squat regularly I don't notice any discomfort at all.

I've made that alarm go off on my first visit there

If I'm lifting light with high reps I don't use it.
If I lift medium or heavy weights I use it every time. If I don't I get a bruised strip going across both shoulders. Then people act as if I have been tortured when they see it. They say, oh my god, what happened to you.
