Ya this is why I'm coming around to the universal minimum income idea. If we're going to have a welfare state, let's do it without all the hoops and bullshite. No more programs with snazzy names like the Louisiana Purchase card. Instead of 15 programs providing $20k in benefits employing multiple levels of government workers, just hand out the cash per month and call it a fricking day.

Elon Musk says it will happen.

Over 60% of people on food stamps have jobs. The problem is not all about laziness, the main problem is the massive distance between jobs with decent wages and cost of living.

If you give a minimum income you think all the layers of bureaucracy will disappear? Fat chance!

okay.... do you realized how much it would cost to just hand out say $10k to EVERY citizen? Or would you just give it to the bottom 50% and see the top 50% bitch?

Also do you think they would still eliminate the programs that will still be needed by the extremely poor and unfortunate? Say you have a kid that is physically handicap or whatever and needs speech theropy and all the Jazz. You think just handing that person a $10k check will alliveate the cost? Or will there need to be additional govt subs for these folks on top of it?

Yeah it's not possible. Once the program is in place good luck eliminating it completely. Just look at what the Pubs are facing trying to repeal the ACA right now. No way they can completely eliminate it without commenting political suicide

Much like some other problems in our country, there are valid points on both sides of the argument - but instead people just want to stand on opposite sides and yell, and it's all or nothing.

There are hard working people that need the help.

There are some people who are deliberately "underemployed" and never try to improve.

There are women with husbands (or children's fathers) making $100 k per year who lie and say they are "separated" cause the want the free money.

There are a lot of "self employed" contractors, barbers/hairdressers, mechanics etc that misreport their income to qualify.

There are divorced women, essentially common law married to another man who "clean his house in return for rent" and get child support under the table.

There are the stereotypical "welfare queens"...but it's fewer than you'd expect.

The program could be cleaned up, but no one wants it to be. Rs and Ds love it because they can make strong pronouncements about it to pander to voting blocks.
