Smoking will be prohibited in public housing residences nationwide under a federal rule announced on Wednesday.

Officials with the Department of Housing and Urban Development said that the rule would take effect early next year, but that public housing agencies would have a year and a half to put smoke-free policies in place. The rule will affect more than 1.2 million households, the officials said, although some 200,000 homes already come under smoking bans adopted voluntarily by hundreds of public housing agencies around the country.LINK

Considering it's not their property and smoke ruins the place, I don't see an issue with the government who owns the property to ban folks they are letting use the propert drkm ruining it with nasty arse smoke

How are they going to enforce this?

By the time they fill out the paperwork or get a search warrant the cigarette will be thrown out

Good luck with that. We (LE) have a hard enough time keeping convicted felons out of public housing, much less all of their families that smoke. Of course we could not care less if they do but I can't wait to see the racism defense b/c it will be coming. It will be up to the housing authorities to enforce it though and they're not very good about enforcing anything.

exactly... I'm sure there will be a two or three warnings type agreement, but don't comply and you get the boot and can't reapply for public housing for 2 years, something like that,

Since the property is owned by the government, I have no problem with this. But this is pretty much unenforceable.

These people don't give two shits about the rules. They can't see farther than 5 mins into the future.

Never thought of it until now, but are we paying people to go around and change filters?

This is the equivalent of changing diapers. What a helpless society.

Good. If you can afford cigarettes, you don't need the government's help finding a place to live.
