Automated vehicles you mean? I wouldn't say never but it would take 50-75 years or so, really when a entire generation or two grows up with automated cars, if ever.

I disagree. Once the technology is in place, which it is, advancements happen rapidly.

Look at air travel. In 75 years, this is what we did.

I'd say that's big. And really fricking scary.

Screw that. You mean I can get on my car for my daily commute to BR and spend 45 mins reading the news, or watching a movie? And traffic pretty much goes away because computers can't be assholes that drive under the speed limit in the left lane or won't let people merge?

Shut up and take my money.

I will just peel out and they will all swerve to avoid me.

Almost 34k deaths per year caused by traffic accidents.

I welcome computer automation in motor vehicles.

What happens if major accidents are no longer an issue, Will we even need airbags or structural metallics?

What will vehicles look like if "safety" is not a concern?

But not EVERY car will be autonomous. There will still be other morons on the road driving their own vehicles. And, by Googles own report that was recently released, human drivers had to intervene to prevent accidents, and those incidents were mostly caused by other drivers.

That's actually a pretty safe vehicle, but I get your point.

In practice, the verdict remains to be seen.

Computers are far superior to their human counterparts, even now.

The problem, as you've correctly noted, is the stupid humans still on the roads.

Even autonomous cars will still be in crashes, until all cars are autonomous.

There will still be crashes.

Maybe not as many, but there will still be crashes.

I also have a theory that the more money you make, the less you're involved in crashes.

I have no way to quantify this, though.

Lower IQ is a given.

No doubt, but I bet it drops 90%.

I'd tend to agree with this.

I would settle for a foolproof way of alcohol detection.

Car won't start until it determines driver is sober.

That alone would cut fatalities and crashes 25-50%, especially in Louisiana.

I'd be all for that, but I'm sure some attorney or do-gooder group would frick that up.

I don't think I'm ready to give up driving to a computer. I love driving and the freedom it gives me and it may be so routine but it's still pretty damn awesome.

Even going through Baton Rouge...

I look at as a test of skill.

Two weeks, ago, a guy in a plumber-truck F-250 passed me on the left. He barely cleared me when his right front tire blew, sending smoke and rubber all over me. Worse, the stupid bitch lost control and veered rapidly across two lanes almost tipping over on the right shoulder.

I stayed in lane, braked, checked the rearview, and kept rolling.

( To be fair, I was past Denham, so not really BR.)

My daughter handles a car better. He was a numbnuts.

Why? The amount of people that die each year in auto accidents is "really fricking scary."

Imagine cars on the road being linked together and "talking" to one another. That means that each vehicle knows exactly where other cars are and will be. At all times they can plot out the safest emergency maneuver to avoid an accident.

Cars will be able to travel closer together at higher speeds, which will reduce traffic congestion. You will also be able to arrive at your destination much quicker and more efficiently.
