The US Navy is planning to stop using manned fighter jets in the coming years, according to Navy secretary Ray Mabus, turning instead to uncrewed aerial vehicles and drones to perform missions at sea, on land, and in the air. Speaking at the Sea-Air-Space 2015 conference on Wednesday, Mabus said that the currently used F-35 Lightning fighter "should be, and almost certainly will be, the last manned strike fighter aircraft the Department of the Navy will ever buy or fly."

By moving away from crewed aircraft, Mabus said the Navy could develop new fighting craft without needing to factor in the pilot's safety, a process that extended the time and cost of projects. "Removing a human from the machine can open up room to experiment with more risk, improve systems faster, and get them to the fleet quicker." To push the drone agenda, Mabus said he planned to create a new office for uncrewed technology in the Navy and appoint a deputy assistant director to champion the technology.

It's crazy that in a hundred years we went from bi-planes to unmanned fighters.

There goes the rich tradition of battleships.

There goes the rich tradition of sail.

There goes the rich tradition of oared galleys.

Times change. There are two kinds of militaries: Those who stay on the cutting edge, and those who become part of a target rich environment.

No shite.

Remember when a naval aviator were the best of the bunch?

And to end with a bloat ware POS like the F-35....

Which is probably the push behind this in fact

Im sure they know things I don't....but I don't see how these craft can have an advantage in a combat scenario. Other than tactics that you consider them disposable.

Latency of control and insufficient AI is a problem.

These technological advances aren't always for the better. The Zumwalt class is an example of this IMO.

Well, it'll probably be 20 or 30 years before humans are completely out of the loop, presumably all that will be taken care of by then. He's just saying there's a finite end to manned flight. Which we already knew, he's just the first one to officially say it.

The F-35 is so bad, it killed naval aviation.

After the F35 debacle I doubt anyone wants to build another jet.

What's so bad about the F35? Multiple folks have mentioned it, but I'm not really sure what the problems were.

I'm sure you'll find plenty of articles on the negatives of the F-35 and I can match each with a positive one. Who cares. The US needed air dominance and superiority and the F-35 provides that. Nothing ever costs as much as initially planned. I've been working government contracts my entire career and this is always the case. Welcome to the real world.

As far as taking humans out of the loop in the future, I see what they are saying. However, there is currently nothing that can replicate the ability of a human to assess a situation and make a decision if there is one to be made. A machine cannot always be counted on to make the same (correct) decision in certain critical situations.

If you leave it, or the fuel truck supplying it, out in the sun it won't start.

I'm not exaggerating.

And it goes downhill from there.
