Actually, sadly having personal experience with exactly this scenario, what happens is people around the parents rally to them and plead with them NOT to throw their lives away. It's not that they don't really want to extract revenge, because that's obvious. I think its having people near you telling you what else you will lose, that prevents vigilante justice. Because let's face it, if this guy was impaired, there are probably 95% of us who would look the other way if a parent blew that douche bag's brains out. But the cops would arrest the vigilante parent, he'd be in jail, away from his family that needs him, he'd lose his job, there would be a long trial, and in the end your child is still gone....

Regardless, there is no way to express my sorrow for these families and what they are likely to endure both short-term and long-term. It's just by the grace of God that each of us avoids these tragedies and none of us are immune to having our lives essentially destroyed in a moment.

Stupid MFer has no excuse for hitting kids. If kids are anywhere near the street you are driving on you slow down to a crawl or stop altogether if they are in the way. I have no mercy for him

To clarify, this happened to a very close friend. And it was way worse than I imagined. It changed my entire perspective on life, my marriage, the way I relate to my kids, the way I view forgiveness, everything. To this day my wife just randomly cries about it. One step-removed was almost too much, let alone if it's your child, the person you love and cherish the most, the one you have PURE uncomplicated love for.

The thing is, these people's lives are ruined. It takes a super-human effort and a lot of GRACE to make your way out after something like this. And it takes years. I hope that community and their family and friends rally to them and support them.

Word around here is that this was a drug deal gone wrong. And he hit the telephone pole behind him. Im not sure if that was the initial blow (highly unlikely given the shape of the truck and the proximity of it in the photo) but it def hit the pole in the photo.

Yes. I dont have a source to link, but let's just say a guy in my office got a phone call with all the details about 30 mins before KATC reported it.

I'm going to guess cell phone/texting was involved.

There should be additional penalties for any accident with a cell phone involved. I don't know how many cars I see running stop signs and red lights while they're on a phone or texting.

I can't imagine being a first responder to a scene like this. A police office, or fire fighter, or paramedic.

To see what they saw today has to be haunting.

I have an old friend in your neck of the woods who had a young daughter kidnapped from the bus stop and taken to a vacant house and raped. He was inside the vacant house and staked her out and grabbed her. You may remember the incident, it was big news at the time and I started a thread-maybe around 2009 or so. They caught the guy, he was young-like 19, and he was convicted.
