Even with the head blown off, that is 100% a Cottonmouth. I've caught them, and that is certainly both the dorsal and ventral color pattern. If the dog was definitely bit (i.e., signs of swelling), you couldn't pay me $600 to watch my dog suffer through that untreated. There may be other options, but some sort of treatment is a must.

Vet is STRONGLY recommending antivenom, along with steroids, antibiotics, antihistamines, blood panel, coagulation test, and a slew of other stuff I didn't understand. Very demeaning tone, like this is my fault. I love my dog...but this sounds like it could easily break a thousand dollars.

Sherwood South? Who's the vet?

I have always had the understanding that if the dog makes it through the first hour or so then it will not die from the bite.
However, this is in reference to my vet/friend and me discussing my beagle.

Geez, sickening what they feel they can charge just because it is an overnight clinic.

Damn. Good luck with your dog!
I've been going to Sherwood South for 20 years. Never dealt with Dr. Morris but the practice is great.

Especially for a snakebite.
Cottonmouth bites are almost never a big deal for a big healthy dog. They swell up for a day or two and they're back to normal. Benadryl does them as much good as anything.

I've had a shitload of dogs get bit by a shitload of snakes and have never had one die from it. Have spent zero dollars on their vet care during the process. My pow pow told a long time ago that dogs are built to withstand snake bites. So far he has been correct

Geez, not like you have to pay it. Of course I suppose you think there should be no difference between regular service hour charges and emergency hours charges right? Yes you pay more for emergency services, but the meds used to treat the animal cost the same regardless. Compensating the staff for after hours work is going to cost you no matter the clinic

Same here. I brought one because my mom made me a few years back. Vet didn't charge me and wrote my mom a note saying the dog was going to be fine

Always heard you give your dog Benadryl if it is bitten by a snake. He will get sick for a couple days but will shake back. Also will build up some immunity so next time a moccasin comes at him he can show him who is Baws!!
I've known of farm dogs to take a bite, swell up and then recover.
I was told as a kid that the venom didn't affect dogs as much as humans. Truth was, my grandparents didn't want to take the dogs to the vet because of $$. They never went and got a dog either. All their dogs just showed up on the farm one day.
I also learned that rattlers don't always inject venom. As my grandpa was bit, but had no venom and no swelling.

yeah this is what I was led to believe.
They swell up and go through a few days of pain and then it goes back down.
I remember when Sampson got bit by a diamond back, his back leg got huge. But it went away.
That dog was tough as shite though.
When you petted him you could feel shotgun pellets under his skin.
He had been shot before.
He was finally killed by a neighbor for chasing his horse.
Stuck with me though that dogs can handle venom.
(though for my dog now, she goes to the vet when she has a slight fever, so I know I would bring her for a bite)

Definitely a cottonmouth. Hope your dog is ok.
And how come the cost of anti venom treatment for dogs seems to be so much cheaper than for humans? I've heard Crofab prices are anywhere from $2000 and up per vial, with 10-12 vials usually needed.

One can milk insurance companies, the other has almost 100% COD paying customers.

It's animal grade medicine, that's why.
