1) Sounds like the University actually listened and responded to its public constituency. Isn't that what it should do?

There's a MILLION more important issues than relocating a damn statue. If you don't like the statue then don't look at it.

It is a cheap public image win for UT-Austin. This costs them next to nothing and it restores morale among black students. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Avoid a firestorm on your own campus while making only a minor splash in the media.

Why don't you explain it, then?

The UT students mobilized for action--that is, they are putting their money where their mouths are.

What portion of the student body, I wonder? And yes, their panties were all knotted up.

Well this is what I left unsaid until just now. We are experiencing something similar here at UW-Madison. You are right--they are very upset. However, they are upset in a very serious kind of way--a way that could create a lot of negative publicity for major public universities.

And, given the climate of opinion toward these major public universities in places like Wisconsin, you can understand why they would want to avoid becoming embroiled in controversial public conversations about race, which are currently characterized by anger, vitriol, and violence.

That is my 100% serious take on the matter. And for the record, I'm a UT-Austin alum so I do care a little.

That some of you don't bother to question the real motives of such a 'firestorm' is why some of us ridicule you.

And what are their "real" motives? Please enlighten me.

And yet you're the one who posted favorably in response to the analogy and even included an American flag pic. Seems like you enjoy the analogy quite a bit. Thought I would humor you.

Lincoln violated the constitution, not the men you mentioned, but he got shot before we could hang him.

Seems like there was a few slaves at the Alamo, When they want it torn down, will that be a minor splash in the media as well.

I understand your point, which is rhetorical, but there is a dramatic difference in scale. One is a statue nobody really cares about on a campus that won't miss it, the other is the state's most beloved symbol. These things are not the same and you are exaggerating the point.

Restores morale among black students?

Geez.

Most 20 year olds probably don't have a clue who Jefferson Davis even was.

Nice melodrama, though.
