That's fricking retarded. Sounds like something my high school football coach would do if they could.

At least when I was in high school, it was a rule in place at Southlake Carroll High School because I had friends I grew up with who lived in Southlake who had to find a select team to join just so they could try out in 9th grade.

Carroll High School was different because its in one of the most affluent areas of Texas, but even then its a retarded rule. The best player at my high school never played select ball and he got a scholarship to Clemson. It's just filtering out late bloomers or those who have baseball talent but never seriously pursued it.

I'm not sure what Rec leagues he is following but no kid sits the bench. They all play no matter what. This is what drives many parents to TB, imv.

TB, when not done the crazy way, is great for a kid with some skill and a love for the game.

My nephew has only ever played rec league ball and made his HS team as a 9th grader. Meanwhile some of his peers who played travel ball are burnt out and didnt even try out.

Yeah, it's pointless if there is an overpopulation of teams in an area. Then it just becomes a pricey rec league.

If you can keep it limited to the better kids, there is better coaching, and higher quality reps.

Once it becomes about the parents, aka "daddy ball", stupidity ensues.

The frick they don't. You don't think kids know the difference between AA, AAA and major teams? You obviously don't have kids and don't know what the frick you're talking about.

As usual

Exactly how it played out at my high school. More rec players than travel players made the 9th grade team in tryouts which created a lot of angry dads. I think this is why the coach tried to implement the travel ball only rule because of the blowback from cutting kids whose parents had them playing travel ball

I bet all of Tony's kids have rings or trophy from their ball days. I bet he never made any of kids give them back. Pot calling the kettle black in this case.

That right there is why I quit coaching. I had a 5'2" kid whose dad was his AAU coach try to tell me he should be my starting shooting guard over my 5'10" kid who could play, but didn't have a dad for an AAU coach. I let his kid get torn apart in one of early season games to prove a point. Naturally, he got pissed and wanted to argue with me in front of a gym full of people. I had to ban him from our gym.

Of course we know what minor leagues were.

I am talking about quality of competition amongst 8 year olds.

When I was 8 or 9 or 10 playing rec baseball we didn't give a shite about the quality of competition in our league. It's not like we were sitting in the dugout wondering if the kids in our league were the best players in the area. When we won games we didn't say "The value of this win is diminished because it came against a crappy rec league team".

Like I said. When I was 10 and playing on the Tigers we beat the Cardinals who were undefeated 15-0 at the time. The way we celebrated that win it was as if the Cardinals were the best 9 and 10 year old baseball team ever created. It's not like we said "Oh well the Cardinals are just a good rec league team, but there are travel ball teams out there who are far better so this win doesnt mean anything"

About the only thing we thought about was whose parents were signed up to bring snacks and drinks for us after the game.

AAU is a cancer as well but thats a topic for another thread

I agree though. At the very least travel ball still teaches fundamentals. AAU teams for the most part are just playground street ball types who lack fundamentals

im not talking about minor league...im talking about 9,10,11,12 year old USSSA divisions. Those kids know the difference between a AA team and a AAA team..as well as the Major teams.......

Same goes for soccer...the kids know the difference between a C1 team and a C3 team.

I thought we were talking about travel teams....REC teams dont divide the teams into different levels.

He explains with select youth baseball, kids don’t sit the bench. That’s not how real sports works, so later in life kids quit playing because they have to sit the bench.

Robichaux is silly. There are problems w travel ball, none of them are his assertions.

Oh and PS, shut up with the life ain't fair or life is hard bullshite. 97.8% of all Americans don't or won't experience hardships unless they make their own terrible choices. None of those choices involve baseball.

Hey boy, you are 8 we expect to see you grinding on the tee to get your three innings in the field!!!!!!!

whats the point for a 12 year old to play on a team where he never sees the field in game time..

Agreed! An 8 year old wants to have fun and has got to fall in love with the game first...by playing it. By the time they are freshman I have no problem with kids not getting PT.

The ULL logo behind him in the clip distracted me so much I couldn't concentrate on what he was saying.

I got hungry, it looks like the logo for a Cajun-themed restaurant.

Glad my kid runs instead of that shite. Traveling every weekend to play a tournament in oh say...Chalmette isn't my cup of tea.

Yeah wasting 6 hours sitting around a track waiting for your kid to run for 4 minutes is much better use of your time.

At least they sell beer at the park in Chalmette
