The UK is now set to become the first country to introduce laws to allow the creation of babies from three people.

In a free vote in the Commons, 382 MPs were in favour and 128 against the technique that stops genetic diseases being passed from mother to child.

quote:

Mitochondria are the tiny compartments inside nearly every cell of the body that convert food into useable energy. They have their own DNA which does not affect characteristics such as appearance.

Defective mitochondria, which are passed down only from the mother, lead to brain damage, muscle wasting, heart failure and blindness.

The technique uses a modified version of IVF to combine the DNA of the two parents with the healthy mitochondria of a donor woman.

It results in babies with 0.1% of their DNA from the second woman and is a permanent change that would be passed down through the generations.

quote:

Other groups, including Human Genetics Alert, say the move would open the door to further genetic modification of children in the future - so-called designer babies, genetically modified for beauty, intelligence or to be free of disease.

David King, from the campaign group, said: "Once you cross the ethical line, it is very hard not to take the next step of designer babies."

Mixing the Midichlorians is a very slippery slope.

I think this would be cool, straight out of the movie Gattaca.

First thing I thought about when reading the article.

They're doing it as a cure for disease. I'm down with that.

I am aware of the ethical slippery-slope as well, though.

I wish I could have been designed without a bum heart. I don't really see the problem with "designer babies." We're all essentially designer babies. Animal mating is a rudimentary form of designing babies to produce the best offspring.

The problem is that it devalues any life. Once the genie is out of the bottle, genetic modification leads to selective physical or biological traits. A designer society would be a scary place, especially for those lacking in the newly desired and engineered traits.

I already can't dunk, but make up for it with my sweet dance moves. I'm not going to be able to compete with designer me.

This is a really bad idea.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore. There should be a different between "What can we do?" and "What should we do?"

But those are becoming the same thing.

"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should." - Ian Malcolm, Jurrasic Park

Well the basis for what they are doing is to prevent mitochondrial disease.

I can certainly understand the apprehensiveness though. Absolutely.
