So I ordered an uber here in dfw and it let me know uber has a new policy where if you cancel a ride after 2 min you will be charged a fee (~$5). I completely am behind this, I get cancelling once someone has driven an excessive distance to reach you and then you abruptly cancel, you should owe $5 for being a dick. But the question is, if a driver cancels on you after 2 min why don't you get a $5 credit? If uber is truly just a "marketplace" connecting riders and drivers shouldn't the rules go both ways?

I know this is kind of off topic, but do they have Uber in Oxford yet?

My driver canceled on me the other night and I disputed the 5 dollar charge and uber issued a credit... It took like 5 seconds and like 3 taps on my phone.

Um they did, but then the cops started arresting and ticketing them. I'm not sure about this exact moment but I thought I read where uber was coming back. Would be awesome.

from what i remember you couldnt just cancel your ride whenever. I believe i have been charges a fee when i canceled a ride a few mins later when plans changed.

But you should actually get a $5 credit for your next ride if it is truly a marketplace where uber has "no" side.

Because you didn't do anything.

An uber driver cancelled on me and I was charged $5. It only happened once and I called and got my money back.

A marketplace is only responsive to supply and demand. If enough folks stopped using Uber because they didn't reciprocate the $5 cancellation policy, they'd start reciprocating it. As it stands, they're offering a supply of a service (with conditions) and the demand is still there.

Market forces don't mean automatic reciprocity.

No, I think you should be charged if you cancel. But why don't drivers get charged if they accept and then cancel?

Theoretically a driver has justifiable reasons to cancel. They don't even have to accept a request when they are notified of it if it is too far away from them, so a rider getting a credit from a canceler is kinda irrelevant (or should be).

This.

If I used the word reciprocation, is that wrong? I use that word sometimes.

Driving time if that turned out to be one cancellation too many.

That's valid, but eBay doesn't charge a buyer who just doesn't pay the seller. They get negative feedback and move on. I use eBay because uber specifically related themselves to the eBay marketplace model. But like you said if enough people complain/stop using things would probably change.

It simply affects their acceptance rate.

eBay is the third-party facilitator of the exchange of goods. Uber does the same for a service. You can argue the Uber driver begins the service when he accepts your request and travels that way. The eBay seller doesn't start to fulfill his part of the bargain until he exchanges the good.

It's really just a money grab by Uber, but they do have a flimsy argument to justify the fee.

Am I missing something here? Why would the passenger be charged if the driver cancels?
