I had an Uber driver a couple of weeks ago in Tuscaloosa, which I'm not familiar with at all, that got me talking football and by the time we got done with the 3 mile trip it was $20, dude knew what he was doing. Got a credit for the extra mileage and time but Uber sucks

It doesn't work that way. You lose money the longer the rider is in your car. It's all about the shortest route from Point A to B. If a driver takes a wrong turn, then he pays for it with his time he could be picking up someone else.

What you got was surge pricing. That's how they make their money, not by taking you on a long route. This also makes much of Ubering during afternoon rush hour a waste of time due to the fact that almost everyone drives to work and you're caught in traffic for a while, and only get about 7 bucks being caught in traffic for an hour.

The only way I'm tipping is if they drive me through to get food or do something spectacular. Most of them already can't drive for shite and I've been some pretty shitty cars lately. I'd rather them just adjust the fixed fares to help the driver's than me have to worry about trying to tip.

Fo real??

Yes, your Uber driver is your personal slave, he should definitely stop to get you food or at the convenient store, that's totally in their job description..

If your experiences are so god awful and unfilling of your standards on how to drive and own a worthy vehicle, you should fricking walk.

i will not tip if the uber driver annoys me (this is like 50/50 chance in my experiences)

I never did tip my Uber drivers or Eats drivers because that's the product they sold.

When Uber/Lyft left Austin I did tip on the other apps because that was the product they sold.

I'm not sure why people are having such a hard time understanding this.

They rate you before you tip them! If anything this will only improve your rider rating, because they won't know if you tipped them or not. Some of you aren't seeing the forest for the trees

Ya, the addition clears up the tip issue once and for all. It's cleared up in the wrong direction but cleared up nonetheless. It certainly fixes that rating/tip issue and that "$5 for 5" crap.

Some broke arse people in this thread... I am glad I can now tip on the way home and not worry about cash. Those drivers are not making much and saving me from sitting in a stinky cab....

Guys uber always comes in a city at a rate that is attractive to drivers and riders then proceeds to cut the shite out of it and tells the drivers they'll make more because they will be busier. It's a bunch of bs. Rates are like 1/2 what they were in Baton Rouge for example. And you know what that gets you? Shitty drivers and shitty cars. The drivers right now might average minimum wage if they are lucky. Who's going to do that and drive their nice car in the ground? You better start tipping good drivers with nice cars or all you will get is shite service and shite cars. Because uber damn well isn't going to raise the rates. I used to drive a lot because I could easily make 25-30 an hour on the side but it was late nights and lost weekends, then the rate cuts came and it wasn't worth it for half or less. I haven't driven in over a yr and a half. I used to roll in my wife's enclave.

I believe in giving a tip to any service worker that gives me an enjoyable experience. Don't care if it's the social norm or not

I wonder how much of the tip the driver will actually get? I assume uber will at least take out the percentage that the CC company charges them.

So, if a certain demographic traditionally fails to tip, Uber drivers will avoid certain parts of town???

why are people giving GN shite for not tipping uber drivers? you're not supposed to tip (well, until now apparently). that was one of their big selling points.

It's not something they have to do, hence why I would tip them for doing so.

I used Uber and never Lyft because I don't want to tip. I'd rather Uber raise the rates a bit than me having to tip. frick that shite.

I'd rather they just add 2 bucks to my total so I don't have to do anything. The whole reason I liked Uber was because I could accept a ride and then not look at my phone anymore. I know that's petty but I'd rather not worry about that.

So they are just doing what Lyft has done all along basically.

Yep. It's one of the reasons I've preferred Lyft for a while now.

Sometimes I'll throw them a buck or two if they bust some moves to get around traffic and beat the ETA assuming im in a good mood, but I usually don't.

It does show that they haven't really been caring about their drivers if they haven't put in this voluntary feature that could help them.

or they were caring about their original business plan more. They started out as the company that doesn't take tips and now have backed off of that. And when tips are involved it is no longer "voluntary", it is expected. And when it is expected then it affects your rider rating.
