I took Uber a few places over the weekend, and rated the driver's how I thought they should be rated on a 1-5 scale. Found out today that 5 means that you want them to keep their job, and 4 means that you want them to lose their job. I had to go back and change a couple of them. Wtf kind of bullshite is that? I was under the impression that 5 was exceptional, 3 was average, and 1 was really bad.

The first guy was awesome, knew where to go without any help, and his wife worked with my parents. Would 100% recommend him and ride in his car again. Gave him a 5. Didn't know they weren't supposed to take tips, but he told me he didn't want one and then gave me a bunch of free ride codes.

The second to last guy was creepy as frick, was missing some teeth, had papers from his parents strewn about his car, and drove with his GPS in his face. To top that off, he taped papers all over his car that said, "I take CASH ONLY tips", and then asked for a tip when we got out. I gave him a 1 because I would not ride with him again if I had a choice. Now I don't want the guy to get fired, but he could surely clean up his act. Had to change him to a 3 after figuring out that they get let go for mid-4s. I wanted to at least give the guy a chance to get the problems worked out.

It is counterintuitive, and I don't want to rate someone as perfect when they could've been better, just because I don't want them to get fired. What separates the exceptional drivers from the drivers that were good enough if you fire all of the good enough ones? After reading the internet, I found out that you should basically rate everyone a 5 unless something went really wrong.

They all got there really quickly. Slowest one was the first guy since there was a wreck turning onto my street (had to go around), and that only took like 4 minutes.

You arent going to make or break the uber drivers job. multiple low ratings will though.

fwiw, i think uber is going downhill pretty fast in BR. people have no idea where they are going or how to get there and some of the cars just straight up suck. used it a good amount this weekend and some cars were dirty and had random family shite in the backseat. sorry but get your kids shoes and clothes out of the car before you come get me. one guy picked us up in a ford taurus that had to be 15 years old. was all beat up to hell with a giant dent in the side.

They get the job done and it still ends up being cheaper than a cab but that company is slipping in BR. Taxis dont have much ground to gain to catch up with Uber.

I've heard about that, too. Supposedly, if you drop below a 5 average long enough, they get rid of you. I guess that could be some rumor BS to encourage high ratings. It has worked on me, though. I've only give below a 5 a couple of times (although, most have deserved it). One was like your experience. The dude had a tip jar in his car. Screw that. The whole point of Uber is the ease of no money physically changing hands, and it was tacky to have a jar. The other was this past Friday. The guy was driving like a maniac. At one point he was going 65 in a 35. Luckily, our ride was only 3 miles.

Yeah, I've been at the mercy of the quality point system in college before. I have no way of knowing if the bad guy had only given a couple of rides and I screwed him on his rating. To drop them for having lower than a 4.5-ish seems stupid. Nobody is gonna have a perfect ride every time, and in my case, I wouldn't have known the rating system unless I looked it up. I would've just kept on rating like I was

I mean damn, some of the guys could've been better, but I don't want them to lose a source of income for not being perfect

Yea we had some bad drivers recently.

One was a lady, who had shite all over her car, not knowing where to go. Was speeding down Lee Drive coming up to a red light. Im sitting there thinking umm do you not see all the cars at the light? We are going about 45 or so and she is trying to talk to us in the backseat. I didnt say anything because I didnt want to sound like an a-hole and if we did rear end someone I would just get out and leave and she can deal with the bullshite.

Other guy in his shitty ford taurus was trying way too hard to talk to us and I guess make the ride more enjoyable. Well while he is doing this, he is swerving all over the road. Trying to get off the offramp on I-10 and we are practically in the grass because he is trying to talk to us about the bar we were going to.

About the only thing Uber has right now over the taxis is the app(which the cabs have but its not as good) and the no tip aspect. Getting in a decent car(by Uber standards) is 50/50 now

Only one old Taurus on Friday night. Everything else was relatively new, one brand new, and all clean and smelled like new. The shitty guy had a loaded Sienna, but it was also loaded with random papers and papers asking for tips

Had to use Uber a few times this weekend since my car was in the shop - everyone was really nice. One dude even gave me a lift from work to a bar and was wearing a suit. Had an older lady in a Caddilac pick me up from the bar when I was hammered and according to the route taken she brought me directly home instead of taking various long ways around.

Props to Uber. Showed some of the old dudes I work with how to use the app - good for them to know in emergencies and such.

White dude and blue taurus?

I think he must lie to the company about his car or something.

The range of cars is all over the place. 2000 beat up ford taurus to a 2015 bmw. I dont think those people last too long(the really nice cars). Also seems like we get plenty of out of town drivers who just dont know the area. I dont want to be a backseat driver but it sucks when they will just willingly sit at terrible intersections instead of taking a side street and saving time.

Ive never seen a tip jar.

I have seen the driver pull out their gun and show it to me, along with a tazer. She said this was for the people that get crazy in the car.

Honestly, it sounds like he should be fired. Rate accordingly.

Yeah, I wish I could've given the first guy higher than a 5. Spent 10 minutes telling me everything about the app and how to use it (after we got to my destination), gave me some free ride codes, and wouldn't take a tip when we offered. You really can't get better than that.

My rider rating is 4.8

Down from 4.9, so I must have pissed someone off recently. Goddammit.

Maybe the rating system should be:

How likely are you to request this driver or recommend this driver to a friend?

Not:

Do you want this guy fired?

I had a female pilot for Delta Airlines pick me up for an Uber ride in a black Mercedes GL450. I was floored. I asked why and she was doing Uber and said she only meets other pilots, and most male pilots are dicks, so she does this to get out and meet new people when she's not flying. She gave me her card at the end of the ride and said I could check with her for availability in advance, next time.

I believe Uber drivers require a 4.6 to stay activated with Uber.

I don't think I've ever given a driver less than five stars unless he/she royally fricked up on the route.

Isn't it a star system? Those seem pretty straight forward. 5 stars is good. 1 star is bad. You have to be a full fledged moron to frick that up.

Yes, but they fire people for a 4.6. That doesn't leave much room for improvement. That leaves me rating someone a 5 that, IMHO, should be a 4 or 2 b/c I don't want to screw with their ratings (which it did).

5 should be exceptional, like, much better than you expected and you would like them to pick you up every time. Hard to obtain

4 = pretty good

3 = got the job done

2 = go home and reassess what you're doing

1 = take a time out because you don't need to be driving right now

I've only given 2 drivers less than a 5. One bitched the entire trip about how uber dropped the rate... gave him a 4.
The other... this mother fricker... picked me up in a pick up truck with just a jump seat in the back and had no fricking shirt on. In hindsight I should've canceled the trip right there but I was running late. Gave him a 2... I mean, I got from A to B on time.

There has to be a minimum rating count or something, or maybe after they have given 100 rides or something.
