They are trying to prevent what is likely the worst case scenario which would be a small single or twin engine plane loaded with explosives and a suicide pilot who is intent on flying it into the stadium. They could hopefully shoot it down first, with any resulting casualties on the ground hopefully being much less than if it had hit the stadium.
