This isn't about a convoy really, but it's a good trucker story...

Some of my buddies went to New Mexico snow skiing and they were driving home in the middle of the night. This trucker comes racing up behind them and rear ends them doing 75 mph on the interstate. They pull over and turn on their flashers to check the damage and this other car comes skidding to a halt. The passenger rolls down the window and says, "Hey, did that truck hit y'all?"

They responded that he had and they said call 911 and follow us!

Apparently the trucker had run them off the road a few miles back and they were in hot pursuit. My friends called 911 and sure enough they were advised to follow him at a distance if they could since there were no cops around for miles. The chase lasted another 30 minutes topping 100 mph until the "convoy" was finally intercepted by state troopers on the other side of Amarillo.

The cops got their info and they later found out through the truckers prosecution that he had been up for 6 days straight on speed and had completely lost his mind. I forget the figures but they said his log books were unreal how many miles he had covered in that time.

Crazy to say the least...

I don't think any of the truckers I've seen could pull off a convoy without crashing into a dozen other vehicles.

Most companies govern their trucks to 65 or 70 mph

That's why some of them pass each other so frickin slowly

Truck A may be 1 mph faster than truck B and he'll hold you up for 2 minutes passing him

I see Mexican "in tow" convoys going 60 on the interstate but that's it.

And how do they enforce that?

Is one cop gonna pull them over or do they have cops with magic powers that can detect convoys and swarm in on them?

I see those all the time between Birmingham and Atlanta. Windows are always tinted. Shady as hell and obviously has something to do with human or drug trafficing.
yeah, every van had limo tinted windows & they were all hauling arse. What had me perplexed was how many random state tags they had. Definitely sketchy and most likely illegal.

Cops pull over big trucks all of the time. The fines are ridiculously expensive, so they don't risk it

Perhaps you could clarify a few things that I've suspected for years.

Do truckers boost their sense of accomplishment and self importance by causing massive bottlenecks with their lane usage antics....or is being an a-hole just a trucking tradition?

Do people who are too stupid (or too drunk) to sit behind the wheel of traditional big rig automatically get the keys to a dump truck?

Do you actually have to score "hopeless" on an aptitude test to be awarded the keys to a Sugar Cane truck?
