that's an unfair standard and not exactly a standard to denote intelligence

Well, I mean, we were talking about the idiots, so...

Don't confuse intelligence with refinement.

have you looked at any "idiot" job lately? I believe the people who build the Coliseums (they are still standing) weren't real fricking bright, yet those places stand, still. You know of any plumbing or architecture that will stand the test of centuries?

stone buildings last longer, on their own, than buildings with modern materials. are you claiming that stone is as advanced as bronze? iron? steel? steel alloys?

modern tech just requires modern care and maintenance

It's not, and we were talking about the "smart" idiots. It wasn't a way to measure intelligence.

the fact that (a) you and i can read and (b) that you can read the text i just typed show that's bunk

So you're saying that there's a standard to basic human survival? I mean, the fairest way to measure basic survival skills is two dump two people, of any age in time, in the woods and let them go.

And what are "pre-societal standards"?

varying standards? sure

i didn't kill the cow(s) or chicken(s) that i ate today. society was built around being able to produce excess calories via agriculture. that alone shows the basic building block of society, that shows a shift in standard

Jesus H, man... We're talking about the easiest way to see if someone can survive on their own. Drop someone in the woods, and you will find out real quick who can, and who cannot.

So the Bronze Age is pre hunter/gatherer?

and i don't think your example is apt

quote:

Drop someone in the woods, and you will find out real quick who can, and who cannot.

i just don't think that's indicative of much. modern man is always going to be at a disadvantage

you don't have to go back 3000 years...go back 150 years. look at the % of our population dedicated to agriculture living a primary living then vs. now

quote:

So the Bronze Age is pre hunter/gatherer?

no, but the standard pre-dates the bronze age

and a person of the bronze age is much more likely to live much more of a primary lifestyle than a person today

they're going to do better if you drop them and their knowledge base in a pre-societal competition than a person today, who has no knowledge base of that sort of living. of course we're also assuming similar geography of their respective experirence

you take a yokle from 3000 years ago from iraq and drop them in siberia and they're going to die as fast as the modern man

No shite, but elle had brought-up someone from 3000 years ago, it wasn't a number I arbitrarily picked...

no, but the standard pre-dates the bronze age

But you just said:

Well, yeah, if you want to start adding extremes to the mix.

I mean, there's a reason why I didn't drop them into volcanoes...

but people of siberia from that era will survive if you tell them to go survive. it was illustrating the fact that you're bringing up knowledge bases and not intelligence. might as well ask a person from 3000 years ago living anywhere to read frog and toad (in english) v. a person of average intelligence today reading the same book

of course the modern man wins. not only is he literate, but english is his knowledge base....and it didn't even exist then
