I understand, and I find it especially hard not to give when my kids are with me, wondering "Why don't we help that guy over there?" Sometimes I'll give them some change if I have some in my pocket, or if I really feel for someone then I'll try to give later or on the way out of the store. But for my own safety, I NEVER take my wallet out in front of anyone.

No problem with throwing a dollar to the bums, though I don't do it. Gutter punks(especially those with dogs) are another story.... F those guys.

I used to give every now and then until I saw this particular guy pull out a smartphone as traffic was leaving the intersection. He ruined the giving spirit for me.

I try to give people the benefit of the doubt (until they lose it). The way I look at it, if they end up using that money for the wrong reasons, then that's their choice. At least I gave them the option

They don't approach me anymore, and if they do, i say "no" before they can say anything

My standard line is, "Sorry, man. I've only got plastic."

Anyone know the dude who goes by "Chief" who hangs out at Northgate?
This guy panhandles all day and somehow started hanging around one of my friends from high school. Dude is one of the biggest pieces of shite I've ever met.

The poor will always be here. Don't give them all your money. All things in moderation. Including religion and generosity.

if you're giving to these scumbags you're part of the problem.
if you want to actually help, give to a shelter...
do not encourage panhandling..

I'll give them a Gatorade, but that's about it.

These assholes up here (Seattle) are purported to make about $75/hr. frick them and everyone who gives them cash. I've seen the same guys at the same corners for years. One even wears a tie and carries a gas can saying his car ran dry. He always yells "Go Tigers" when he sees my rig. He gets nothing from me.

"Cunningham (Fulton Sheen's niece): People would stop him all the time. They’d want to shake his hand. He’d always take an interest in whoever walked up, taking the time to greet them. He always welcomed them, and was never short with anyone. He was just my uncle back then, it didn’t dawn on me until later that he was a celebrity.
Since he was known for his generosity, people would often come up to ask him for money, telling him how they were down on their luck. He’d hand them $20. I’d ask him, “How do you know that they’re not putting you on; that they really need help?”
He’d answer, “I can’t take the chance.”"

Panhandling is against the law in nearly every city in Louisiana so I give them nothing. Welfare and food stamps are readily available to those people so there is no reason to give them money and encourage them to continue to beg. Look at it this way: tourists don't want to be harassed by panhandlers and many restaurants and most hotels survive on tourist dollars. When you give money to panhandlers you efforts could have a negative impact on tourism and cost those working in that industry ther job.

I completely stopped caring when I saw a bum get dropped off at his usual intersection in a taxi.

Frick panhandlers. They are all over the place in West Palm. This one able bodied mid 30s white dude stands on a major off ramp intersection wearing some brand new $100 Nike running shoes with a sign talkin about, "please help." Frick that dude.
There is also a young couple I've seen around that are obviously begging for meth money. Nope, not giving you shite. Go steal your meth money like real meth heads you losers.

They probably make (collect) at least $25/hr of tax free money. I wouldn't feel too sorry for many of them.

Our church in BR would get people coming by all the time asking for cash for gas. They would show up in cars with kids and say they had run out of money trying to get home. While they were never given cash, one of the guys would take the to the gas station and fill them up and give them groceries from our food bank. Cash only supports many alcohol and drug addictions.

That was a great story. Tell it again.
I gotcha bro:
This morning I watch two purported homeless guys almost come to blows over which one was entitled to stand in a particular spot where traffic comes off the connection. Cussing and pointing and vulgarity abounding. It takes me a couple of cycles to get to the light, where I find myself the first car, right next to the guy who won the argument (by trying to hit the other guy with his backpack). He stands outside my window with his cardboard sign giving me the most pitiful puppy dog face.
I'm like, F this guy.

There's two guys that stay on the corner across from ihop on college. They spend the day begging then when they scrounge up enought the fat one puts the skinny gimpy one in a shopping cart then they go behind the Chinese restaurant and smoke crack.
More often than not this is what they're up to. The ones who are embarrassed to ask for help tend to be the sincere ones.
