Just throwing this out there, an acupuncturist repaired my meniscus without surgery. Much longer process, but I didn’t get cut open.

I had the surgery back in 96 or 97 it was a bucket handle tear. Willie Rolf had the same surgery at the same time.. That fooker was playing the following weekend. It took me about 4 days with no weight on my knee to get back to walking with a little hobble.. Before the surgery my knee was locked at about a 45 degree angle for about 3 days. The Dr. said he could force straighten the knee... I passed on that painful method.

I had mine repaired a few weeks ago. It not hurting like it was prior but still don’t have the strength in it yet. The Dr said it had a lot of arthritis in it from previous surgery. A partial replacement is in my immediate future. I have an appointment with the surgeon this week.

That’s great to hear! David Pope from Bone and joint clinic is doing mine. He and his office have been fantastic so far.

Edit: corrected to Bone and Joint Clinic

If it requires surgery, how long is the recovery? I’m trying to get an idea for when I could go back to work. Not physical labor work, I sit mostly but some walking

I had surgery on my left one last February. (I had a slight tear in it for almost 9 years)

I had a meniscectomy. The tear was on the left side and he also cleaned out some skin growth on the right. I was on crutches for a week.

The surgery itself is lacriscopic. 25 mins.tops. Recovery takes around 3-5 months. I turned the corner on mine right at the 3 month mark(Memorial Day weekend). I had to kick baseball season but I was ready to go for football the last half of August. It's been 13 1/2 months since my procedure and I can do everything on it that I did before. It still gets achy on occasion and I have to be careful how I sleep b/c I can still stretch it a little much and it gets achy for 3-4 days but aside from that it is doing great. It will hurt the couple of weeks after surgery. So be ready.

Prepare to hurt in therapy. Especially early on. I was in therapy just over 2 months.

I suggest, and bring this up to your Ortho to see if your insurance covers it, to use a cold compress machine on your leg. It will accelerate the healing process. I loved the one I used.

Good luck.

I suffered a torn meniscus during the pandemic. My orthopedic doctor tried treating it with steroids and gel injections to no avail. When the powers that be finally allowed elective surgery he did arthroscopic surgery, also no relief. Finally, I had a full knee replacement and I'm walking and exercising without pain.

Good luck to you.

Sports Med PA here who assists with 2-3 knee scopes on a given week.

Depends, if it is a meniscectomy (just trimming it up) you can be back to walking within a few days, still hurt and tight but not too bad , depending on how much they cut out and if anything else is going on

If they do a meniscus repair… life will suck for a while, 4-6 weeks on crutches with no or limited weight bearing on that leg and no bending past 90 degrees

Being an airplane pilot makes things more interesting, the risk for blood clots, the need to be active for in case of emergency, the possibility of being on narcotics may take you out of work longer, I would hope your employer would make you get medically cleared before returning, and they way you described the incident it may fall under workers comp?

^best answer

Sounds like its the former for you.

Yeah bone and joint clinic. I was supposed to go to BROC but couldn’t get an appointment soon enough.

I had a torn ACL and major meniscus tear in the same knee in late 2018. The ACL reconstruction sucked, but for the meniscus I was supposed to be no weight at all for 6-8 weeks. I pushed it some, but still was off work (except remote hours) for 7 weeks. You aren't supposed to put any weight on the meniscus until it has healed, but mine was a bad bucket handle tear.

A little fraying to clean up won't be the same because the part bearing weight is intact.

Define “requires.”

I tore my meniscus in 2021, and after lots of pain and worry finally got my MRI results and met with a surgeon. I made the decision to try alternatives for 6 months before going to surgery (mine isn’t repairable) - partially due to the $5k price tag.

After a few months of Knees Over Toes stuff I was so close to pain free I pushed forward. Almost 2yrs later, I barely even notice it. I lift, run, hike etc- the only time pain comes back is if I take more than a few days off of working out.

Depends is it a repair or just just cutting and cleaning up a tear. Is it your right knee? If so it may be a while before you drive. Be as active as you can be through it. I caught a pulmonary embolism on my second knee surgery. The second was a repair so a longer recovery…saddle PE… I’m told I’m pretty lucky to be alive.

You should be able to walk after the surgery but may need crutches for a while. The type of tear is the deciding factor.

I live right outside of NPS. Whenever you recover (and if you are good) there is a pretty solid group of hoopers in a league (HFC) that play at Cypress Community Church every Saturday morning and Monday/Wednesday evening.

I was out for about two and a half months after mine but only because I’m an adjuster and have to be able to climb roofs. It would’ve probably taken a month or so to be able to navigate airports.

Off topic, I’ve since had both knees replaced. Right knee in January last year and four months later I went up to Minneapolis and was climbing roofs for four months. Got the left one done last November and that mfer was a bitch. Just now finally able to get back on roofs and currently waiting on the e-mail that will tell me where to go.

I would get one of those knee scooter things if you are going to have to be walking to and from gates and terminals

He can’t use that. Those things are for ankles, feet or other lower leg injuries. He can’t put all that pressure on the knee that was just operated on.
