I may have a torn meniscus. Doing an MRI tomorrow to find out for sure.

If it requires surgery, how long is the recovery? I’m trying to get an idea for when I could go back to work. Not physical labor work, I sit mostly but some walking.

Thanks.

If the surgery is on Friday, then you can go back to work by Monday as long as you aren't a pussy.

Depends on the type of tear.

I had a bucket handle tear and IIRC I could walk better within a few days of surgery than I could for QUITE a while before then.

Not having an obstruction in the joint was a major fricking improvement.

It’ll probably be arthroscopic, like my three (two on one knee, one on the other) were. Four small incisions. Takes about 45 minutes. My first recovery was nonexistent…..I was working the next day. Second was a little worse, but not horrible. The third was much, much worse. I couldn’t get out of the bed for three days. I peed in a mason jar. If I slightly moved my leg, the pain was worse than anything I’d ever felt.

I think age was the biggest factor in the different recoveries.

Well I’m an airline pilot, so I have to do a bit of walking from gate to gate or between terminals. The flying part won’t be a problem.

But like my mother said, “If I’m on an airplane, I don’t wanna see my captain limping onboard the aircraft.”

I would get one of those knee scooter things if you are going to have to be walking to and from gates and terminals IF you are trying to work a few days after surgery.

I don't care if my pilot has no legs, as long as he can fly a plane well.

Better hope it's just the meniscus and not any cartilage damage as well. If that's the case you better hope they save as much of the meniscus as possible. Otherwise you'll be looking at a new knee in a few years.

I was walking around the next day. But at the same time, my knee will never be the same.

Exercise bike for strength and range of motion always worked wonders for me. Agree with comment above regarding return to work on Monday with Friday surgery, assuming sedentary/office employment.

The weird thing is that I didn’t do anything to “injure” it. No sports or jogging. Was just walking through the terminal a couple weeks ago and my knee started hurting. Didn’t think anything of it, and the pain went away when I sat down. But it continually got more frequent and painful until this past week I started limping and the pain continues even when I sit or lay down.

Hurts like hell to straighten out my knee or rotate it. The PA examined me this morning kept poking around and moving my leg in different positions and said it’s most likely a torn meniscus.

All I know is you'll fully recover before Zion does.

That's all I got.

I was on crutches for two weeks. Then after they took the stitches out it was another week or so depending on the distance I had to walk.

I was gone to be macho for my two week follow up and walk into the doctors office no crutches. Boy that was a mistake by the time I got back to the truck it was hurting like a some bitch.

Depends, if it is a meniscectomy (just trimming it up) you can be back to walking within a few days, still hurt and tight but not too bad , depending on how much they cut out and if anything else is going on

If they do a meniscus repair… life will suck for a while, 4-6 weeks on crutches with no or limited weight bearing on that leg and no bending past 90 degrees

Being an airplane pilot makes things more interesting, the risk for blood clots, the need to be active for in case of emergency, the possibility of being on narcotics may take you out of work longer, I would hope your employer would make you get medically cleared before returning, and they way you described the incident it may fall under workers comp?

Same here, in all my cases. BTW, I mentioned I went to work the following day. That was a dumb scheduling error on my part, and I had to go. You certainly shouldn’t do that. Plus, I think it’ll be a challenge for you to get in the seat, and then sit there for long periods. Doctor made me do 6 (4,5?) weeks of PT on my second a third cases.

Had surgery 4 weeks ago. Surgery on a Thursday, back to work Monday. Tired of knee not being 100% yet, but 6-8 weeks is what I been told before everything back to normal.

I was 21 but I had surgery and six weeks later was back playing basketball recreationally. I believe the doctor said they shaved a piece the size of a lima bean off. Of course now 14 years later any single leg movements, steps up or stairs are a bitch

Had mine cleaned out .. was unrepairable (that would have meant crutches for 5/6 weeks). Did the left one on a Friday and was cooking dinner and doing laundry that night. Now my family had to bring the dry clothes to me as I was on crutches.

Think I went to work on the next Tuesday or Wednesday only because I could and my job is flexible. Could have gone on the Monday but I just opted to wait.

So so glad that I had it done.
