Don't know about NOLA - there are still strains of the old Dixie Mafia in Southeast Louisiana. Can't say anymore, my PC might be tapped.

The old NOLA mobs are pretty much dying out. Back in the early 60's places like Delmonico's were regular hangouts. One of my grandmother's family came to New Orleans from Sicily around the turn of the century. Pretty sure my great uncle was involved in a crew at a low level. Some real greaseball dudes were always around and his funeral was like something from the Soprano's.

They control the island. I was in Palermo a few years ago and saw a wedding at the cathedral. All I could think of when I saw the dad escorting the bride into the church is "what can I do for you on, this, the day of my daughter's wedding." Oh, and the fact the dad had the ugliest suit I ever saw on a white guy. There was also a big placard of a priest who's considered a martyr because he spoke out against the Mafia and now sleeps with the fishes.

I have no reference because I've never been around American cosa nostra (that I know of), but in Sicily they're fricking crazy these Euros are generally pussies, but these guys will kill you where you stand

I know the priest you're talking about. Palermo is where the power was and still is, but these rural clans took shite over in the 80s. Ruthless. You cooperate, they'll kill your family too.

When I was there the corleonesi were running the island. I don't know if they are anymore, but it works differently than how I imagine American organized crime works. and they're definitely more violent than the American mob

I wanted to go to the village of Corleone when I was in Sig and was told that I really did't want to do that. The locals there really didn't cotton to American tourists. However, "Godfather" merchadise was available all over the island.

It happens to be a coincidence. It may have well just been Ragusa or San pietro clarenza. Point is, these hillbilly bosses were ruthless as shite, but they took over a decade AFTER that movie came out

Eh, they'll work with Naples and anyone. They own properties in Rome

I understand the geographic divide but it's not the same. People on he mainland look down on them as well

This just goes for all Sicilians too. They don't like main land Italians because they look down upon Sicilians.

Yeah I was just speaking of the people in general. My grandmother was Sicilian and actually married a Neapolitan, but she would tell stories and had a lot of unfavorable opinions of the Italians further north

I hate to make an apples and apples comparison to the industrial and cultural divide between north and south in the United States in the 19th and early 20th century...but it's the closest comparison I know of
