Have any of your children or anyone you know had tongue-tie surgery?

Our little boy has some speech and tongue movement issues and his new speech therapist recommended this surgery.

Just looking for some feedback and if the surgery helped with your child's speech.

Thanks

She sells seashells by the seashore.

That's all I got.

ETA: Good luck to you and your boy.

My little niece had the surgery and she's doing just fine. Won't shut up in fact.

I will say, they did the procedure before she was even discharged from the hospital as a newborn. It's a really easy procedure, just a little snip.

I've never heard of it, but all of the best to you and your boy.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Get multiple opinions and ask doctors. I know a speech therapist - she doesn’t need to be advising parents on surgery.

One of those things that sounds like it does the opposite of what it actually does

My wife is a speech therapist and in most cases she is highly against it.

My niece (maybe a yr old at the time) had it not too long ago....it's just the snip of a little piece that has overly connected the tongue to your mouth.

It's an outpatient surgery even for babies that age....the hardest part is the upkeep. You have to do exercises with your tongue and mouth for a while so that it won't go right back. As a parent you have to basically force your child to do it since they are too young to really do it themselves.....as with anything forcing your baby to do something usually results in teeth gnashing (figuratively) and stress on the parent

Routine thing that is really common, we had our daughters snipped very young. No big deal at all.

He'd cut a quarter of a cord if he got a quarter for every cord he cut.

I had it done when I was about 4 or 5, painless and really helped my speech. As far as I can remember we just showed up and they used a laser to clip the connected portion freeing up my tongue. Probably better to do it younger as I speech therapy for a while due to learning to speak with limited tongue movement.

I’m tongue-tied…been that way my whole life…no speech issues or anything. It’s just a small flap connecting my tongue to the bottom of my mouth

A gum doctor recently recommended that I get un-tongue-tied when I do gum-receding surgery, but I haven’t done it yet

He says being tongue-tied (along with age and brushing too much) is one factor in my gums receding

Make sure it's done with a laser, not a scalpel.

This seems like unnecessary alarmism.

I had the release surgery around first grade. I had to do some speech therapy to correct my R's and S's. No long term issues.

We had my sons done when he was 5. Your kids ENT or dentist will do it. LET AN ENT DO IT! We walked out of the OR waiting room with him barely 5 minutes after we left the pre-op. Incision was cauterized with no bleeding. He was talking immediately with no pain.

A work buddy had his kids done by their dentist and the incision was closed with stitches (which I hear is common with dentists). They had to deal with bleeding and wound care over a two week recovery.
