Regardless when you do get a pool, you should secure it like your children are under the age of 5. It is a kid magnet.

No doubt about it. I'm too lazy to look for stats but a huge percentage of child drownings are in other families' pools. They are the definition of "attractive nuisance."

If you haven't, look into Infant Swimming Resource. The swim/float survival lessons. As Nurse said, it only buys you a few minutes...but those could be huge minutes. And at 3.5 your kid should be able to swim proficiently by next summer with actual swim lessons.

Gross, but can't say I didn't suspect this.

How can you not be watching your child? Guarantee mom was texting or whatever on her phone.

My nightmare.

We have a pool. I put hotel style locks on top of doors. By the time he gets those open he will be able to swim better than me.

My kid. And it has nothing to do with the look of my yard. There is no need. My house is on lockdown unless I open the doors. My kids can't even get a key unless I get it. Pay attention to where your kids are and there won't be a problem. LSUNURSE you don't have kids, otherwise you would know about how much a responsible parent keeps tabs on their kids, especially a toddler. I have a soon to be 2 and soon to be 5. They know the pool is off limits. Watching your kid is often referred to as "being a parent". That is always the case no matter what house you are at. For the record, my 4 year old can swim and my soon to be 2 year old knows to flip over on her back and swim to the steps. Be a responsible parent and tragedies like this hopefully will not happen.

What happens when you have get togethers at your house? You honestly are telling me you keep all doors locked to the outside then?

That's when these drownings tend to occur....when other people's kids are over and people are hanging out. You may watch your kids like a hawk, but what about people you invite over? Do they do the same? What happens if one of their kids sneaks out into your backyard and falls in your pool that has no fence around it?

I may not have kids but considering where I work.....we see a lot of near drownings....and they happen in pools without locked fences.

Not saying you are a bad parent who doesn't watch your kids....but locked doors to the backyard is sadly not enough in some cases. Again....treat that pool like a wild animal in your backyard in regards of the harm in can do to your young child.
