To what extent would LSU be more prestigious if it were in a safer location?

I read that LSU was in the bottom half of SEC academic rankings a few weeks ago and it kind of got me thinking. I've met a handful of people who have chosen to send their kids to ULL, Tech, private, or an out of state school because of Baton Rouge's high crime rate. How big of a role do you think that plays?

Has more to do with F King. He destroyed LSU's academic ranking.

It has less to do with location and more to do with the demographics of students that are accepted. Location has no bearing on the “prestige” of a university.

Johns Hopkins, Tulane and Penn U are all surrounded by slums yet they continue to knock it out of the park when it comes to academic rankings.

Bogalusa High School has great academic opportunities but parents who’s kids would score better on tests all send their kids elsewhere due to the 10% of shite heads that cause all the trouble. So their academic ranking sucks. I wouldn’t say that a better ranking would make them prestigious cause it’s sitting next to a paper mill. Look around LSU man. BR is a shite hole plant town.

I’m all for shitting on BR for its crime problems, but I don’t think this has had a long term effect on LSU’s (lack of) prestige. I wasn’t around here prior to 25 years ago, but I don’t think violent crime was as bad as it’s been more recently.

LSU is and will always be known for sports, and that’s it.

None. If LSU had stricter requirements it would probably become a more prestigious school. Most schools and universities are in bad parts of town.

Let's be honest, the ULL kids couldn't get into LSU and feigned concern over crime was their excuse.

This right here

You know LSU fell off a cliff when graduates of a degree like ChemE might need to consider taking the EIT after the FE to show competency. Like WTF was I learning the past 4 yrs.

Very little. U of Chicago is a top 10 university. Also, see NYU and USC among others

Eh, maybe they could be another mediocre sec school. I would bet the majority that go to ULL or tech just didn't get into LSU or with the right scholarship. Kids that go out of state usually come from wealthy families who can afford to guide their child away from one of the worst states in the country. Saying this as a long time BR resident. LSU is good for a good college life, broad selection of majors, and decent job opportunity out of school. It's location probably impacts it a little, but also makes it what it is.
