Tips for breaking in a pair of boots?

So I received a pair of Ariat ramblers back in January as a late Christmas present. They were a little big in the toe but extremely tight in the sides and across the top of the foot. I wore them for about a week every day with no luck. From there I wore them a few times here and there with the plan of sending them back for a different size since I have heard lots of people have trouble with the sizing. I put them in the closet with the plan of returning them when I had a chance and ended up forgetting about them.
Came across them this week and felt weird about sending them back after having them for a few months so Ive decided to just try to break them in. After wearing them everyday this week they are a little better but still really tight in the before mentioned areas. I have heard a lot of people say to fill them with hot water and wear them until the water drys out but I am worried this could damage an inexpensive boot. Anyone have success with this? Any other tips? TIA

Check and make sure there are no alarms and just force the lock open.

Scrub'em with soap. Let them sit in the sun for a day. Polish them that night.

Put them on, step in a pool or pond to get them wet, and walk around in them for several hours. After they dry they should be much more broken in.

Oil them, put a baseball in each one and wrap with a rubber band. Stick them under your pillow.

Have you tried this with a cheaper boot like Ariat? I read somewhere that some cheaper boots have cardboard in sections of the footbed and soaking them could ruin the boot.

You'll get better answers on the OB.

Condition them, helps soften the leather a bit. Wear them- a lot. I got a pair of Frye boots over the winter, it took several weeks of everyday wear to get them broken in. Sometimes I'd double my socks to make them thicker and try to get them broke in sooner, but could only do that for short periods. If they rub your feet in places, you can get some moleskin to keep help protect your skin. I had to do that for a couple weeks. You could take them to a cobbler and see about getting them stretched. They'll still probably need some more breaking in, but it could help, and it's pretty cheap. I wouldn't do the water thing, water's not good for leather. Once you get them broke in, you'll still want to wear them to keep them from shrinking back down. Not everyday, but you should probably wear them at least once or twice a week.

Actually, rub them down with a water/rubbing alcohol mixture on a cloth before wearing them.

Buy better boots. I have learned my lesson over the years, cheap boots just aren't worth the fight especially if they don't fit right when new.

It didn't mess up my Chippewas. I soaked them in hot water for ~30 minutes and wore them with a thick pair of socks until dry. It really sucked sleeping in the recliner with wet boots and I started thinking my buddy who told me to do this was screwing with me, but damn if it didn't work for me

I didn't do a thing to my boots. Just wore them as much as I could and they are now broken in really well. When I did buy them though, the lady told me to fill my bath tub up and stand in it for a few minutes. Never did it.
Also, pointed toes FTMFW.

My family was in the shoe business for a long time so I know what I am talking about here. Take them to a shoe repair shop and they can stretch them for you. There are stretchers for shoes that designed to stretch specific size and such. You can wear them and get them wet, but who wants to walk around in wet boots all day? But know this you can only stretch them so much. You say they were extremely tight on the top of your foot and sides but loose in the toes. That sounds like you need a wider size. I would explore if you can return them before trying to stretch them.

Pee in them then wear them. It really helps.
