Rarely do I come down on the side of government in disputes with private business. The move by Tom Wheeler, head of the Federal Communications Commission, to give all of us more choices when it comes to buying or renting the boxes necessary to watch cable or satellite television is one of those rare instances.

Wheeler says it's ridiculous — and overly expensive — that most customers are forced into paying monthly fees to rent decoding boxes from their cable or satellite company in order to watch programming. That why the FCC last week announced a proposal that, in effect, will break the near-monopoly enjoyed by cable and satellite companies, making it possible for consumers to purchase or rent decoding boxes from third-party vendors.

Good. I bought all my Internet stuff, got a better deal for a better product, and don't pay monthly.

if you buy your own modem you can get a phenomenal product for cheaper than anything you can get from Cox.

Imagine the awesomeness of your Roku box being able to decode cable signal as well.

I'd love it if i had one device that could do all the streaming and cable at the same time. Right now i have my xbox for all streaming stuff and cable box for regular TV

The box situation is my only beef with cable companies. I hope this gets fixed.

I wonder what happens for the companies who do the whole home media gateway thing.

I currently have WOW and I have a main box that is my modem and router combined. It also handles all DVR and interconnects the boxes I have for each TV.

What also sucks is that I am unable to put the built in router into bridged mode and disable DHCP in order to run my own router because it is needed to connect the TV boxes.

I wonder how this will work with "on Demand" services as well. Companies like Cox will probably require you to use their equipment to access non-live content.

Exactly this. They will make up the costs elsewhere. Until a la carte cable is the norm, we're all getting shafted anyway.

Cox laughs at $10. Now they'll claim they can hardly break even. Subscriptions up $50 bc they can still hardly eat.

This would never fly. The providers are encrypting the signals. They don't have to handover encryption keys. That is just dumb.

Agreed, but cable/satellite providers will just up the cost of their services. They're going to get their money one way or the other.

The cable TV bubble is going to pop very soon. More and more people are dropping overpriced cable plans and switching to streaming.
