How's the cost of living? I'm in Chicago now and I don't have a car or have to pay car insurance or gas. If I were to movie, I'd have to spend a lot of money in that regard. I spend maybe $15 a week on transportation now.

I might know someone who did this and they couldn't be happier. I'd strongly suggest it. You gotta family?

I don't know anyone in Charlotte. I have a sibling in Chicago and we were both talking about it. Her bf and I are in the same industry which is huge in Charlotte.

The other options really are staying obviously, NYC, Atlanta, or Jacksonville

Well schools are phenomenal in the right places, so if you've got kids or plan on it then that's a plus. I haven't heard/had any complaints so far, really enjoying it actually. Also it's fricking beautiful if you're into out doors.

That's gonna be an issue, you really have to have a car to get to all the places you wanna be in Charlotte.

Traffic can be a nightmare in places. Especially on I77. Several really nice towns to live in on the outskirts of the city. City is big with lots to see and do.

I moved to Charlotte a couple years ago after a decade in Chicago. The cost of living is certainly less. Had a 2 bedroom condo in the southport corridor. Bought a 5 bedroom house in south Charlotte for the same price with lower property taxes. You 100% need a car though.

Honestly at this point, the only thing I really miss about Chicago is the restaurant scene. Charlotte can be a little dull after the hustle and bustle in Chicago, but I can get to Asheville in a little over 2 hours and Charleston in a little over 3 hours. Love both those towns. Charlotte has a nice craft beer scene the restaurants are getting better as it grows.

I understand that. That's why I'm curious about the cost of living. Cause it looks like it'd be spending 300-400 more a month for getting a car. And I'm under the impression that the salaries in Charlotte are quite a bit lower too.

I'll say this, paying the same amount in rent just outside of Charlotte will get you almost exactly twice the amount of house/apartment as BR. I don't know dick about Chicago but hope that helps as a measuring point.

ETA fun fact on how amazingly racist Zillow is: if you look for rental properties, it will give you information on the school district including the ethnic breakdown of each school. I thought that was hilarious.

I don't know that salaries are always lower. I was able to get a decent raise for largely a lateral move. Depends on the industry I suppose.

Well, I have spent $1100 bucks living in a 300-350 sq foot apartment with practically zero counter space in an old building in a very good part of town and that's just I need more. I had bigger apartments in college when I graduated 4 years ago that were 1/3rd of this
