And the average ACT score at the high schools in Ascension is not close to SJA, Catholic or St Michael's.

Catholic High Average ACT For 2015-2016 it was 25.4

Average ACT for Dutchtown 26 For Dutchtown

Your paying your money to keep your kid from riff raff. Academically they are similar.
And I graduated from CHS so this isn't some bitter thing I have against catholic schools. Just stating what most people don't realize.

ETA: And this isn't even a good comparison because Catholic will just dismiss the students who can't keep up academically. Public schools don't have that option so there are more lower scores bringing the average down.

That is the average of the people that replied to the Niche survey. So your stat is whack.

We aren't in Dutchtown or St. Amant zones. The one we are zoned for is ranked 7/10 on Great Schools ratings. I realize scores aren't everything, but that is what is prompting us to look at all the options.

But the cost of private is sooo high so public is definitely appealing. I'm just a nervous mommy and don't want my kids to grow up. Thanks for the insights.

If you're in Ascension save money and send your kids there. Particularly Dutchtown or St Amant. That's the whole point of living in Ascension.

If you have a couple kids you'd be wasting over 100k dollars sending them to a private school. I went to multiple private schools as a student and now as an adult I teach in Ascension. I'd recommend Ascension over the schools you mentioned even without factoring in cost. Factoring in cost it is a no brainer.

This is the answer. I went to private schools all the way from K-12th and then to LSU. My kids go to private catholic schools now and it's great and all, but we're parishioners. We live in BR because we work here... but if I'd have made the switch to Ascension back in the day, I'd be vested in their schools. Dutchtown/St Amant are the easy solution. If you try now to get your kids in a Christian school in BR, it's gonna be a pain in the arse traffic-wise, budget-wise... everything.

You're already in God's country. I'd stay there. Get involved in your local schools and your kids' homework and enjoy the money you're saving.

Individually, St. Amant High School and Dutchtown High School surpassed the state and nation in this measure with average ACT scores of 20.4 and 22.3, respectively.

APSB

ETA: When I graduated in '99 it was $3500 a year for everything. That gives you an idea of how much it increases every year.

Ok, so 45K for grades K-8 and 44K for grades 9-12 totaling 94k not counting for inflation, Catholic goes up a good bit every year (for just one child) is worth a couple extra points on the ACT? And remember Dutchtown has to include the bad apples they just can't dismiss.

To attend FCA your child will be required to become indoctrinate into their religious beliefs and thinking. I would think long and hard unless you are comfortable with your money and education for your child with the Swaggart's.

Family Christian is practically a cult. If you want to get a glimpse of the culture, go to church there one Sunday to see for yourself. It's a hell and damnations church.

I admit I don't know much about the culture or specific beliefs. That's part of the reason I am asking. We would love a spiritual aspect to our children's education (but still want quality education) but it would need to be in line with our beliefs too, so thank you for that insight.

If you believe in funding Swaggart's world, go ahead. I'd probably choose home schooling over that place, and my opinions on home schooling are not very complimentary.

When I was a kid Swaggart lived on Tara Blvd and had a radio station broadcasting his sermons worldwide before his church and that was where he was pulling in the cash.

We used to cut across his yard and he would be outside smoking and drinking and gave us the "get off my god damn lawn." More than once. Old fricker. Had a yellow convertible VW Beetle. My oldest sister went out with son Donnie a couple times and just couldn't take it.

Last place my kids would go to school is there.

But I'll say this about him, he held on to all that after getting caught with his pecker out.

Starting my son here next year, luckily we are in the Spanish Lakes zone if we don't like St John. Pretty good reviews on Spanish Lakes Elem

I'm sure it's a nice little cultish indoctrination camp like other evangelical Christian schools. If you want your kids force fed bullshite, by all means send them there.

I think you'll like it. We've been very happy. Definitely have to put the work in, but it's well worth it. We have three children and are in the heart of ascension. Our kids will all go there and on to catholic high schools. The price is well worth it to us. They may all end up being dumbasses regardless, but it won't be bc we didn't try.

Same here. SJP. Love it! And the principal there taught me at Catholic.

Not sure why my point was downvoted, but point still stands. It's not just the education. They say prayers every day, talk about religion, mass is tomorrow, etc. They fill in the gaps on the spiritual stuff when me and the wife are unavailable.

What about UHIGH? Why is FCA the only option? Also there's some good public magnet schools. Westdale elemntary magnet from what I've heard is top notch. Not certain about middle schools but I know there's a few magnets as well and then for high school you've got Baton Rouge High and the new Lee. Only downfall currently for those is the lack of full allotment of athletics if your kids are big in those.

Send your kids to Dutchtown middle or Prairieville middle. Both are extremely high rated. Then Dutchtown high school, another extremely high rated high school. Save your money. Unless you want a smaller school with solid academics. Then FCA would be a good choice

My wife made me go to one of the children's mass. If that doesn't move you...nothing will. I love Mrs Naquin. I think she is everything a Principal should be. I'm very happy academically and spiritualy there. It's just right.

Not even close. You linked Niche which is an unverified, self reporting website. It's like citing the OT for average bench press of 545.

Dutchtown is a good public school and their ACT average is just over 21 but it's still a whole four points under CHS.

Well, they don't believe in evolution, and they do believe in speaking in tongues.

That's not true. I have been involved with CHS for over 20 years and that hasn't happened once.

One of the biggest advantages to sending your kids to CHS/Episcopal/U High is the people they meet there turn into buisness connections as adults

CHS also does a better job grooming your son to be a well rounded man than any school in this area.

Yes it is. I saw it happen while I was there. Happened to one of my good friends. He was told CHS isn't for everyone and should maybe try a different school. Will they flat out expel you? No. Will they pretty much tell you to leave? Yes. This person had zero discipline problems. I'm not counting the ones who constantly got in trouble.

Thats the typical recruiting pitch. My brother used to hire people where he works and I know others who recruit/hire for their company. We've had this conversation, they could care less where you went to high school and understand just because your parents didn't make enough money doesn't mean you can't be a valuable employee. They care about what degree you have, your college GPA and if you can get along/fit in with the personality of the company.

Your third point is valid and true but it goes back to parenting. Its great the school does do that but its also very important the parents are enforcing the same thing. That is done at home also.

My sister-in-law is the worst when it comes to catholic VS public. Her son goes to catholic and we were at a Catholic VS Dutchtown baseball game. Keep in mind she's still trying to convince my wife and I to send our kids to a private school. A couple DT kids had hair that was a little long. She says "look at those boys with the long hair, that would never be allowed at Catholic". When I asked whats the first thing her son and most others at Catholic do during the summer and when the seniors graduate? Let their hair and beard grow out. We did it while I was there and its still being done.
It all goes back to parenting. You either care about your child and their decisions or you don't.
