To be fair, plenty of "white" schools and kids use those facilities too. I actually think that the Louisiana Leadership stuff is great. We needed better athletic facilities that promote teamwork and leadership in BR. If they fundraise correctly, I have no problem with LL
no they do not. I work across the street from LLI and i see everyday what goes in and out of Cleos gym.

they do. They fundraise out of your income taxes.

i agree

i've got two young sons, toddler and newborn, As they grow older, i want to spend the summer weekends camping and doing cool shite with them, not going to tournaments all over the state that they are only half heartedly interested in

I don't have a problem with it if the kids are washing cars, selling candy or even bagging groceries. But I treat the kids/parents begging for money outside wal-marks and on the neutral grounds the same as the damned bum on the off-ramp of almost any I-10 exit.

I have acquaintances that feel differently. I've tried to explain my points on this until I was blue in the face but they just don't get it. Meh...

The problem there is that between practice, traveling, and retaining some semblance of childhood, there is not time for these kids to do fundraisers unless an adult organizes it and runs it. I haven't seen many real adults in these programs either.

I have a friend that works for Liberty Mutual and they were donating $5 for every policy quote was sent to them. All you had to do was get a quote and no commitment beyond that. Thought that was a pretty good idea.

I never give to the ones on the street corners and rarely to the ones doing raffles or jambalaya. Just don't usually have cash on me to donate for the latter.

I guess that is the problem.

I just feel that the parent should just pay it themselves then.

Agreed. I don't buy the "I don't have time to fundraise between practice and tournaments." that's bull.

The fact of the matter is many of these AAU "coaches" have zero qualifications to actually coach and most don't have a background check. So anyone can coach and they of course go about it the wrong way. Too many/not enough practices, fundraising that doesn't preach hard work, sacrifice and earning your way, illegal allocation of funds, too many tournaments out of their means, etc.

Unfortunately these people also have contact with college coaches and ruin chances with some kids for their own benefits.

Probably the most disturbing thing about AAU is that it doesn't take school performance and discipline into consideration when determining playing time.

What are we teaching the children?

It's happening youth football in BR and Nola too.

I don't give to any group that bums in the street, including the fire department collecting for MD right out on the center line near busy intersections.

Their bumming is putting me at risk of a lawsuit if one of them trips and falls in front of my car trying to catch a dollar. We need a law that grants immunity to a driver who hits a panhandler in the right-of-way.

This. A car wash, poboy sale, BBQ plates, etc... I can get behind, but a bunch of kids wanting something for nothing? frick that.

The thing about all these travel and select movements in sports like baseball and basketball is that I don't think they've improved the end product athletes in the U.S. over the days when there were things like Little League and biddy basketball. Heck, in both baseball and basketball I think the rest of the world has done some catching up to us.

Somewhere along the line it became a money making endeavor. The national organization (AAU, USSSA, etc.) has to get their cut. The tournament director has to get his cut. In some cases the park/gym owner has to get their cut, etc. etc.

They sell it to parents as a way to make their kids better through higher competition. But I think the players who were developed in the $25.00 per season little league or rec programs were just as good.

That place is putting out good programs. I was in its marching band in HS. The kids there are super disciplined.
