Right, so it's pretty useless other than adding a few letters behind your name, and making sure you graduate with $100k+ in debt if you want any hope of future job prospects.

It shouldn't its usually about coaches

But then it doesn't apply in a lot of cases as many coaches are ex-athletes.

I mainly "do" but occassionally teach. Doing a good job teaching for something once a week takes a lot of effort and knowledge, especially to older smart kids....they can pick up on bullshite. Somebody doing a good job of teaching everyday is doing a lot of work and being "evaluated" the entire time.

does this true statement offend teachers?

I've mainly heard this in reference to professional schools like Med School and Law School where you often find people who had limitations that affected their ability to succeed in the private sector decided to teach instead.

Probably when it is directed towards professors, especially in the sciences.

You have to have 'been there, done that' to get a tenure position at university.

You're reading it wrong.

It doesn't say "Those who can do, can't teach".

I used to think it was true. Now that I'm older I don't.

Additionally, there's plenty of people that know how to do but can't teach.

I have worked hard and enjoyed a pretty decent professional career as a clinician, administrator, and university professor. Our hospital is aligned with two medical schools, and it is normally anticipated that we will draw teaching assignments as intern supervisors as well as class room professors. If anything, my experience of 30+ years actually allows me to give my students a more applied perspective and on occasion even take issue with their text.

I am sure that there are those who go straight from grad school to teaching. However, a number of us do not. So yes, I would brush the comment off and perhaps chuckle at the stupidity of the person making the remark.

The saying is attributed to George Bernard Shaw, and is a more of slam at academia in general. Shaw himself was mostly self-educated -- unlike his crony Oscar Wilde, who went to Oxford (and didn't tip -- I guess he was black Irish)

Yes, the medical profession needs those that "do" to help teach.

I had a professor in college teaching PTEC classes who was a mechanical engineer. His plant ended up shutting down and shipping the jobs elsewhere and he took a job at the college because he didn't want to move and his wife had a good career. He told us one day that it was well worth his time to take the teaching job because of the salary and the time off. He was one of my favorite professors and really knew his shite.

So I guess he would count as a teacher who can, and did.

Settle down. No one is saying teachers aren't necessary.

No because you know what I can do?

Take multiple long vacations every year, have plenty of time to get house projects done or whatever else I feel like doing, and spend tons of time with my kids while they are growing up.

ETA: I can also get a free Chick Fil A sandwich today for Teacher Appreciation week.
