I think its really true in sports because someone can know how to gameplan, train, and teach fundamentals but themselves have no natural talent.

Generally dumb statement.

Does a history teacher teach because they can't "Do History?"

English?

does this true statement offend teachers?
Yes.

It's "Those who can, do.

Those who can't, teach."

"Those who can't teach, teach gym."

It shouldn't offend any traditional teachers since the quote is almost universally aimed at coaches.

If a math teacher "can't do" math, how can they teach math

Which begs the next immediate question about whether their value in school is overstated- What is the current outlook for history or English majors these days other than teaching?

I think the adage refers to being able to apply the knowledge to making money in the "real world," general statement, but like many generalizations, has some truth to it

it's a bastardized version of this:

Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach.

Being a truly good coach or teacher is actually really tough.

Think about college football coaches. There are only a handful of truly talented head coaches out there right now.

Which is a great complement to teachers.

I've always found that when I teach someone else something, I truly begin to understand it and will never forget it.

But if someone teaches me something, it will disappear eventually.
