While I'm not sure what prompted this kind-of weird rant, it's going to be harder to foster patriotism.
There is going to be less and less that unifies us. People who come here aren't required to assimilate, they can go to their ethnic enclaves and set up shop living the way they used to. Certain groups can have pride in who they are (being gay, black, whatever), and some of us are directed not to do so. The idea that diversity is what makes us great is misguided.
Diversity is what sets us apart from other parts of the world. But, if we ultimately fraction ourselves apart and then claim to be unified by vague concepts of freedom and peace and other shite that fades when things get real, it's going to be problematic.
Set aside "traditional values" and focus on western values. The rule of evenhanded and just laws, transparency, free speech above other virtues, individual responsibility, etc. We need to promote the adoption of these above all else. That starts with universal condemnation of actions and attitudes that don't agree with that mindset, not blind acceptance of "oh that's how their culture does it."
I mean, when the media and public are split on whether it is ok for petulant college students to shut down a school and exclude press because they need their "safe space," what do we have as a country? If we can't condemn that, we're pretty lost.

8 downvotes and just my 1 upvote... people don't GAF about America anymore, Broke. The only thing they care about is what kind of handout they can get today.
"Syrian refugees" kill a bunch of people in Paris and now half of America wants to have these frickers sleeping in their guest bedrooms. May as well just hand over the fricking keys.

Of course not. Your post was clearly a call to something more important. Something both intangible and very real. Something that needs to be done right now but never really stopped because it's so goddamn important and people who don't see it are stupid. And it's totally not rambling!!!

Obviously you're not talking to me because I watch Real Housewives of Atlanta and drink gimlets on the weekends. I truly believe MySpace is making a comeback too. Im gonna be ahead of the curve on that one

Actually, it's exactly what I'm saying. The days of those types of men, en masse, is over. You can't sit at your desk today, bitch at people for not being true blue and not comprehend we're a "frick it, someone else will do it" country. It's not a MINDSET instilled in the YOUNG anymore. Kids don't ask Santa for GI Joe.

"Instilled" and "mindset" today would equal endoctrination by Obama in today's political climate.
We quibble over whether to say God in the pledge of allegiance while our main threats quibble over proper materials used to make pipe and vest bombs.

Most of the politicians are like that.

fricking this. Not sure what your definition of a true patriot is but I consider apathy more harmful than anything. I see less apathy among the college crowd compared to the rest of the country.

What is a "patriot" to you?
You can go on and on about how millennials annoy you, but I think we've already established that the baby boomers were worse

He's cis gay not trans straight, you prick. Nobody's putting my baby fig in a dress, he'll wear regular little boy clothes fabulously like God intended.

It really doesn't. The climate is so divisive though that nothing can come but more apathy. And as we all age we will be more sensitive to it.
It's a "kids these days" argument though. I wonder what 40ish year old World War One vets thought of 18-22 year olds in 1939-40?

Think how fabulous your home will look after he remodels it in 15 years?
Oh.
Emm.
Gee.

The apathy towards the United States being a sovereign nation are quite troubling to me as well.
