It's all relative. I would of said I drink more than most ( a few most nights) but I am not anywhere close to the top ten per centers even on a weekend.

during most of the year I'm probably in the 8th or 9th level. The summer I drink a good bit more but nowhere near 10 a day unless I spend the week at the beach.

I'm in the fourth decile. I might have a beer once every 6 months or so, which keeps me out of the bottom three deciles.

I'm just not really into it.

Not all day. In my youth, I know I consumed at least 10 per night, every night. But went to class every day when in school, and went to work every day after graduation. You can consume a lot of beer/liquor after hours.

There have been many, many weeks when I have consumed 72 drinks. There have been many weeks when I have doubled that. But to average that over the course of a year takes real commitment.

Top 10% - It's not like an real alcoholic counts how many drinks they drink in a week...their measurement is by how long they can stay sober before the first one hits their lips in the morning.

Same here and that is usually on a Friday or Saturday. I don't know how people can function the next day at work after drinking, even 2-3 drinks.

Really? You don't know how someone can function the next day after 2 beers the previous night?

Working in a hospital and asking every admitted patient how much alcohol they drink, I can say it's not uncommon at all for people to drink a 12-pack (or equivalent) plus per day. And it's definitely safe to say that, in the hospital setting, those who average 73 drinks per week make up a disproportionately higher percentage of the population (i.e., >10%).

You're saying there have been many weeks when you've averaged 20+ beers per day? Dude.

Not to mention people like me who lie to the doctor when asked about alcohol and tobacco.

No, a functioning alcoholic works during the day and then hammers back 10 drinks each night. Somehow manages to wake up and repeat.

Now that I'm older, I don't go get drunk at the bar very often. But, I do casually drink at the house for no reason a lot more than I ever did before. I'm a 2-3 bottles of wine a week type of guy. I feel like that's a lot. That's only equivalent to 18 drinks a week.

how generous you are with the Jack

1 shot of liquor = 1 drink, which doesn't seem like a lot.

Consider how many doubles and triples you've had, or consider that big party cup that you fill up 3/4 of the way with Jack, then top it off with Coke.

Sorry to say that that does not count as one drink.

No. It was Andre.

Modern Drunkard article on Andre the Giant

Another story, when Andre had back surgery:

quote:

The time arrived, and the anesthesiologist was frantic. He had never put a person of Andre’s size under the gas before and had no idea how much to use. Various experts were brought in but no solution presented itself until one of the doctors asked Andre if he was a drinker. Andre responded that, yes, he’d been known to tip a glass from time to time. The doctor then wanted to know how much Andre drank and how much it took to get him drunk.

“Well,” rumbled the Giant, “It usually takes two liters of vodka just to make me feel warm inside.”

And thus was a solution found. The gas-passer was able to extrapolate a correct mixture for Andre by analyzing his alcohol intake. It was a medical breakthrough, and the system is still used to this day.

That's right, the wade boggs rumor was 64 beers on a cross country flight.

I was drinking pretty much a fifth of vodka a day towards the end of my drinking career. Seems like a lot, and it was, but I seldom got wasted drunk. I got so damn good at it I retired.

Guy I met was drinking 3-4 fifths of Crown a day. Slept with a bottle under his pillow. He's been sober almost a year. fricking miracle.
