I lived in Jacksonville for a while... pretty boring but when I was there the whole area was suffering bad wildfires so it was really smoky and hazy all the time
Beaches had jellyfish everywhere, went south to Daytona Beach but Daytona is pretty nasty, lots of white trash there and litter everywhere
Downtown is a cool area though with the riverfront. Also check out the Mudville Grill when you are there nice sports bar

I loved hanging out in St. Augustine. Do they still let you drive and park on the beach? I know you can still drive on Talbot beach north of Mayport.
We moved from Jax in 1996 and the family lives in Atlantic Beach so that's where we hang out. Clark's Fish Camp in Mandarin used to be cool back then. I also like Fernandina Beach - The Palace Saloon is a classic bar and have a snack at the Ritz just to check out the property. Catch a concert at Freebird Cafe in Jax Bch. Pete's Bar is a good dive bar near the classier places in Atlantic Beach. Sometimes the Mayport Naval Station will have a ship available for public tours - call first. Do a couples spa at The Lodge in Ponte Vedra Beach. Use solo cups at the beach - cops are a little stricter than Louisiana.
Edit: Riverside is a great area. It was being gentrified as we were leaving. Great architecture and character.

Don't let you drive on the beach anymore in Anastasia park. A girl got run over a few years back. I used to work at the restaurant before it became freebird. Fernandina is great also. Riverside has transformed over the last 5 years very nice area again. Money has moved back in and driven the rift raft out. Jacksonville has come along way since the st.John's towncenter has moved in. Its not Tampa yet for the trendy lifestyle but it is getting there.

Access the beach north of Atlantic Blvd. Jax Beach collects all the trash from all around. The residential areas in Atlantic Beach have public access points at the end of each street. Less crowds and a higher class of locals.

I'm expecting about a 1k budget for the 2 of us and a 500 budget for me on beer. Am I being realistic here?

You should be fine on that budget. Great thing about the beaches and st.Augustine it doesn't cost you anything to get some sun and walk around st.Augustine. There are quality restaurants in areas we mentioned that have good food and drinks at good prices also.

Well a couple of the plantations/national parks we plan on visiting cost nothing as well....
We expect most of our budget to be spent on food/alcohol and then maybe 300 on events/gas for the weekend. A lot of stuff we looked up can be done with a short walk which should help. I know I plan on buying a lot of beers to bring back to La

There are a couple of access points where you can drive on the beach south of St Augustine, it's a ways from Jax but we always did it for the convenience of it.

Tdu last thing before I get out of here. You are staying less than a mile from the baseball stadium where the Jacksonville suns play. Austin Nola is on the team this season if you want to catch a game. Its like 10.00 to get in. I am out

St Augustine is nice, and beach's are always a winner. If you do the beach move go south of Ponte Vedra (sp?) a few miles till you hit the state park, or do beach in st Augustine, one of the few places you can drove your car on beach.

No bad suggestions, but no one has mentioned that most of them require a fair bit of driving. Jacksonville is the largest city in the country in terms of land mass. It's not terrible, but don't think the beach is around the corner from downtown. Two world record sized sharks have been caught off the jax beach pier as well. If you are into that type of stuff they have deep sea charters out if mayport. First and only time I have ever seen a navy submarine underway was on one if those trips.
