SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea fired dozens of shells Thursday at rival North Korea after the North lobbed a single rocket round at a South Korean town near the world's most heavily armed border, the South's Defense Ministry said.

They're going to keep this up until one day things spiral out of control in one of these exchanges and all out war breaks out before they know what's happening.

UPDATE: US troops mobilise in South Korea as Kim Jong-un declares 'quasi-state of war': live

I still seriously doubt an actual war breaks out. Still, the situation warrants watching.

It would not be pretty. They have a population of almost 25 million who have been brainwashed into thinking their leader is godlike. They've got a massive, albeit mostly obsolete military that outnumbers almost 2 to 1 the combined forces of the US & South Korea on the peninsula. And if it ever came to war, there's a good chance that China would eventually be sucked in to save their arse so there's the whole issue of it expanding into World War III. And on top of that, they've got the bomb and they're almost assuredly crazy enough to use it.

Which is why you don't worry about civilian casualties. Those people are beyond rehabilitation.

Every war we have been in that involved Asians has been messy. My great uncle was on the ground in Korea and it sounded like pure hell. Not hot showers for 2 years and bayonetting any dead they passed to make sure they didn't jump up and shoot them after they walked by. Granted our military is much different today but just because their tech isn't on par doesn't mean there won't be casualties in a ground war.

We are on the brink of a world war with the worst leader we have ever had as commander in chief.

North Korea sank that South Korean boat and killed those sailors awhile back and nothing happened.

Nothing will happen with this either.

I don't know.

If it came to an actual shooting war, I think there's a better than even chance that China stays out, if only to rid itself of that albatross known as Kim. My understanding is that even they are a bit sick of his antics.

Of course, they may demand certain concessions...like maybe Taiwan.

I'm not saying it will either. They've been doing this for decades. I just said they're going to keep this up and eventually one of these incidents will spiral out of control.

That's a possibility. Or they could use the fact we'd have our hands busy in Korea to make their move on Taiwan and the South China Sea in general.

Am i the only one who doesn't think we're on the brink of ww3? They hardly even have electricity in North Korea.

I highly doubt we're on the brink of WWIII following this latest incident. These "exchanges" are quite common and have been since the end of the war roughly 60 years ago.

True, the country itself is a total shithole where people are literally starving to death. The North Korean military on the other hand is well fed, equipped, and on a constant war-ready footing. but keep in mind, most of their military is very obsolete. If it ever did come to war, they'd be crushed. But it would take time and there would be substantial losses in the process. And don't forget that they've now got nukes. That's a major wildcard on how any war on the Korean peninsula would play out.

Neither do I.

I'm not scared of NK's missiles or nukes. Pretty sure the US/SK ABM arsenal will harmlessly shoot them out of the sky.

The real concern is the MASSIVE amounts of artillery pointed at Seoul and other SK cities.

NK's best chance at "leveling" SK is not through nukes but by lobbing hundreds of thousands if not millions of stockpiled shells within minutes of open conflict.

I also have serious doubts that China would intervene especially if NK initiates the war. The world is vastly different than it was in 1950.
