There have been around 3,500 reported cases of microcephaly - babies born with tiny brains
Judging by what the average OT dweller posts, I can only assume this virus has been around for at least 40 years.

It has been isolated in Africa up until very recently. It wasn't even known to cause major issue until it started popping up in the Pacific 2-3 years ago. It made its way to South America sometime last year, and is beginning to spread.

That sound you hear is the joke whizzing over your tiny microcephalic head.

We have better methods of exterminating mosquito populations now, namely introducing genetic hybrids that only reproduce sterile offspring. But environmental impact studies are stopping these methods from being used.

If I understand correctly it started in Africa, made it's way to South American and now Central America. While that's not a 100% guarantee it will spread to the U.S., I'd say it at least points to the strong possibility that it could spread to here in the near future. And considering the devastating effects of this virus, I'd say the danger it's spread poses should be taken with the utmost seriousness and urgency. Wouldn't you agree?

I agree but what can we really do? Also, doesnt it seem like the only devastating effects seem to be for women carrying children in the first trimester?(which already have a slew of shite to be worried about)

So if they come out with a vaccine for pregnant mothers we should oppose it, right?

took over 50 years to get from remote area of Africa..... then all of a sudden May 2015 it shows up in Brazil, and we have 18 cases in Mexico in 2016.

Mexico News Daily | Friday, January 22, 2016
The Health Secretariat has issued an emergency declaration after confirming 18 cases of people infected with Zika fever

The emergency declaration comes after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a travel advisory suggesting pregnant women avoid traveling to 14 countries, Mexico included.

Tighter controls on the mosquito population for starters.

From what I've read (which is limited to this thread btw) it is just women who are pregnant who have to worry about this issue. But in my opinion this does nothing to lessen the severity of the threat and in fact, from a public perception standpoint, will only heighten the need for some proactive move to try and head this problem off before it breaks out here in the U.S. Imagine how the public would go apeshit if this time next year there's hundreds or even thousands of babies being born across the southern half of the U.S. with severe, life altering birth defects due to this virus.

I like to see a source to that. 99% defects sounds high for just about anything.
