El Salvador Urges Women Not To Get Pregnant Till 2018 To Combat Spread Of Zika Virus

quote:

Until last year, Zika virus hadn’t been detected in the Americas.
The newly landed virus has been ravaging countries in Central America, South America and the Caribbean. With more than a million reported cases, Brazil has been hit hardest by the virus.

quote:

But the biggest concern is the potential impact on babies developing in the womb. There have been around 3,500 reported cases of microcephaly - babies born with tiny brains - in Brazil alone since October.

quote:

El Salvador has called for the boldest measure of any of the embattled countries. While Columbia and other countries have called for a stay on pregnancies for about six months or so, El Salvador has urged prospective moms to hold off until 2018 before trying for offspring.

“If we don’t make any recommendations to the population, we could have a high incidence of microcephaly,” said Eduardo Antonio Espinoza Fiallos, the vice minister of health. “Of those children, 99 percent will survive, but with limitations in their mental faculties.

quote:

In a statement, The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the regional office of the WHO, said: "PAHO anticipates that Zika virus will continue to spread and will likely reach all countries and territories of the region where Aedes mosquitoes are found."
PAHO is advising people to protect themselves from the mosquitoes, which also spread dengue fever and chikungunya

This virus is incredibly scary. Way more scared about this versus Ebola.

Time to bring it back....

ETA: Considering this new mosquito-borne virus causes birth defects in humans, I find it quite ironic that DDT was banned because it caused defects in bird eggs.

3,500 documented in one country in 3 months after never being found there.

1st discovered in May 2015, and it's ramping up, and since it discovered when you give birth, you could have been infected months ago and have been spreading it without your knowledge.

So, the apocalypse is not going to wipe out humanity in fire and brimstone, it will watch as we wither and die as people can't have viable children.

Well played, nature. Well played.

Looks like it is time to bring back the widespread use of DDT.

My wife introduced me to this. It's tragic and we do not plan on visiting South America anytime soon. The fact that it may make its way to U.S. soil is scary as shite.

Actually the research on this was very biased and subsequent studies did not confirm the test results used to ban DDT. 100 things you should know about DDT This is what happens when you have activist in government positions.

My wife's 15 weeks, and I'm fricking terrified of this shite. I'm contemplating not letting her outside until miniSchwartz2.0 is delivered.

Does it matter when in her pregnancy a woman is infected with Zika virus?
Earlier in pregnancy seems to be more dangerous.
The most dangerous time is thought to be during the first trimester – when some women do not realize they are pregnant. Experts do not know how the virus enters the placenta and damages the growing brain of the fetus.

Closely related viruses, including yellow fever, dengue and West Nile, do not normally do so. Viruses from other families, including rubella (German measles) and cytomegalovirus, sometimes do.

not 100%, think you are mildy sick for a couple weeks, but the baby is going to get birth defects 99% of the time

quote:

Zika is spread by mosquitoes of the Aedes species, which can breed in a pool of water as small as a bottle cap and usually bite during the day. The aggressive yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, has spread most Zika cases, but that mosquito is common in the United States only in Florida, along the Gulf Coast, and in Hawaii
