We do have plenty of Yellowhammers here in Alabama, and FYI they're really called Yellow Shafted Flickers. You're right about the Civil War connection, and when the Confederate Veterans in Alabama attended reunions, they wore a yellowhammer feather in their caps or lapels...
Alabama made the Yellowhammer its official bird in 1927, and is the only state to have a woodpecker as it's state bird.

I know South Carolinians are referred to as Sandlappers. I thought Mississippi was Clay Eaters.

Chapter 301 Veteran of the Year in 2006.
That's how I found out about the Yellowhammer
history today.

Many people on this board don't take it well when you bring up the War of Northern Aggression. Because of political correctness, you are likely to be accused of being insensitive, intolerant, or even a racist.
