condolences for your mother-in-law.
Insurance covers property losses and would have been contractually obligated to the estate. But FEMA only assists the resident of the flooded dwelling. Y'all do not live there and do not qualify. Unfortunately an act of God reduced the inheritance, but fortunately it did not compromise your day to day existence. I take no joy in both of your loses.

All this, such a shitty situation. The fact that your wife lost her mom then has to deal with this nightmare really sucks. Unfortunately, I can't see anyway taxpayers should be on the hook for paying someone's inheritance. Hire a good estate attorney who will maximize the value of the estate but still close it out properly with the least amount of headaches to all beneficiaries. Hopefully your wife does not have a bunch of money grubbing siblings who will create additional unnecessary pain and aggravation to an already terrible situation.

I heard that if you are in a flood zone but don't have flood insurance they won't help. But if you are not in a flood zone and flooded they will help if it's your primary residence. Not sure though just what I've heard.

Totally agree but as a taxpayer in this situation I question it.

Call an estate attorney. While Mr. And Mrs brsa may not be entitled to assistance, your mother in laws estate is until it has been dissolved.

I think people really do not understand what the purpose of Fema assistance is for. I feel bad youre in a bad situation but the purpose of fema is not to fix a house that no one lives in.

Call and write your federal congressman and senator and ask them for help. They will at least submit a "congressional inquiry" and if it's possible to get an exception or consideration for mitigating circumstances sometimes they come through.

I can do a renovation loan on it. Or sell it and let the buyer do it after you clean it up, which is probably a better option. That's what people in New Orleans did post Katrina.

This isn't bad advice at all.

Also, work that estate lawyer angle.

Dealing with estates is no fun as it is. Been there. This definitely would weigh heavy on me but sounds like you're as calm as can be.

I agree. In this situation there is nobody that is left homeless as the house was vacant. FEMA doesn't exist to maximize the profits when you sell an inherited asset.

Option #2 from FEMA was a loan for repairs from what I understand is a very reasonable low rate. After talking to an estate lawyer, per OT's advise, it may be in our best interest to pursue the latter.

Signing out, beat, and thanks to all for the opinions and/or info.

Peace
