If you don't want to work Thanksgiving/Black Friday, don't get a job in retail. Also, don't act like it's some big surprise that you're required to work on that day.
There are many people who don't get to spend holidays with their families. Doctors, nurses, hotel workers, restaurant workers, movie theater workers, law enforcement, firemen, plant workers, airline personnel etc. I don't hear them bitching.

So don't whine mall store employee. You should have expected this going in. You should have definitely expected it considering you've worked there for several years now. If you don't want to work on a holiday, maybe choose a different profession.

BTW, you can have that turkey dinner with the family the weekend prior, or another day. Thanksgiving is just an arbitrary day the govt picked way back when. Spend time with your family whenever you want. You don't need a special day.

You think those same people have the luxury of picking and choosing whatever job they want?

I know a guy who owns coffee shops. His employees fight over who GETS to work holidays because the tips are better and they have an excuse to skip out on their family events.

Including the owner's of these establishments. They also probably work everyday regardless of if their services are required or not.

And retail establishments opening on Thanksgiving is also just an arbitrary decision made by the executives at retail corporations.

I have no problem with these places opening early on Black Friday morning but the decisions made recently by these companies to open on Thanksgiving day is just as arbitrary.

There is no reason these places have to be open on Thanksgiving unlike other industries.

To say "just don't work in retail" is a bit silly since retail being open on Thanksgiving is a recent phenomenon and many of these people have been working retail for years and years prior to this practice. They're not just going to give up their positions because of this, but they're still stuck in a shitty place.

There is training available to do all sorts of things. Anybody who has to work so much that they can't take time for training should at least think before they have too many kids who will likely end up in the same predicament. People having kids before they are ready is the root of a lot of problems.

The horse people like Aspy, and cattle people like myself. We never actually take a day off. We might just feed and turn out , but it's a couple hours every day. And I mean every day even Christmas

How dare we forget about the NFL players and all of the support services around those games on Thanksgiving day?
