The story of two LSU alums forgotten and stranded in open ocean by dive-trip boat

Just learned about this incident through a great video posted today that summarizes the disappearence. It's an 8 minute video that worth the watch if you are into the true crime/mystery genre. They were both BR natives as well. Did anyone here remember hearing about them going missing?

Thomas Joseph Lonergan (born December 28, 1964) and Eileen Cassidy Lonergan (née Hains; born March 3, 1969) were a married American couple who were unintentionally abandoned in the Coral Sea off Australia's northeast coast on January 25, 1998, during a group scuba diving trip on MV Outer Edge. Their absences were not noted by the boat crew until two days later on January 27 and while search efforts resulted in the discovery of personal effects presumed to be those of the Lonergans, they did not lead to their discovery. Their whereabouts are unknown, though both are presumed dead.

Wasn't this what the movie Open Water was based on?

Says they were from Baton Rouge. Someone has to know of them.

That movie is how I learned my girlfriend at the time was fricking deathly afraid of sharks. I didn't know any more than she did, so when she asked what the movie was about, I told her all I knew was that it was a story about two people scuba diving who were lost at sea. At first when it was just all scuba diving and they were floating around, she was fine. Then after the sharks appeared and she realized what was happening, she LOST. HER. shite.
Like "crying and refused to sleep that night" lost her shite.

tommy was my roommate at LSU in the 80s.
good people, him and his sister. the diving expedition was devastating to the family and friends who knew him. i think he went to brother martin in NOLA before LSU.
eta i have lots of stories. definitely an interesting person. he was majoring in chemical engineering and very passionate about it v/s other engineering degrees. he would sit and rant about how mechanical engineers weren't real engineers and their 'senior project' consisted of building a car. 'big deal, he said..detroit has been building millions of them for 100 years'
tommy was a great guy. he talked me into keeping Suh as my Calc II teacher and told me 50% of the class would leave after the first class and hearing him talk. I took his advice and sure enough..half the class was pulling out their schedule books to try & find another session 10 minutes in. Suh ended up being one of my favorite profs at LSU. Yes he had a thick chinese accent but he was a hoot and a great teacher.

The flip side of this is that there was a guy from Baton Rouge who faked his suicide on the ferry that crosses between the north and south islands of New Zealand. He left a suicide note saying that he'd jumped. His wife collected the life insurance. He found a kiwi and married her. Years later someone figured it out and he was busted. New Zealanders were reacting weirdly to "Baton Rouge" many years ago when I was over there.

I feel like there’s a good chance that Eileen’s brother Adam posts on here.

Sounds like a decent plan to avoid the tax man.

What's interesting is it doesn't appear he committed insurance fraud here because he didn't conspire to collect the policy.
Probably would have issues with unpaid US tax, etc though.

You’re right about Tommy. Lived by him in Hatcher freshman year. He was a Brother Martin grad ‘82. He had a bust of the pope that had a hat and scarf ... funny guy... still think about how surreal that whole story is..... sad.

he could get on a damn rant! used to crack me up how worked up he'd get about just about any topic.
i lived in kirby smith with him.
he moved to stadium dorms his senior year because nobody wanted to live there so he had the room to himself.
i used to visit him and i'd go to the bathroom it was just 12 toliets in a row with no dividers or anything else. you just had to sit down and do your business with other people doing the same thing.

In the late 70's a guy was fishing 60 miles offshore in the Gulf Stream out of South Carolina on his sportfisherman. After a good day of trolling, the older guys went into the cabin for the ride back in. About an hour or so on the way to the hill, the question "Where is my son?" was asked. Everyone scrambled, but the kid was gone. I think he was around 12-14, older than me, but his brother was a year or two behind me at school.
All they could figure is that he tried to stand up and take a piss off the back and went over. For years thinking about it, I always saw him splashing and screaming in the wake as the boat got smaller and smaller. I knew that was the worst thing that could happen to someone.
As I got older and raised kids, I realized that what his father must have gone through was much, much worse.
