JP Morgan spent over a year in the Azores when he was 15 to recover from rheumatic fever. Kind of a random spot for the mid 1800s.
It was pretty common back then for people to move to different, often rather exotic, locations in order to "treat" various illnesses.

Shep Smith is the same way.

Do you know of some other famous people that did that? Kind of interesting to me.

A friend of a friend was married to a great grandchild (I think) to the Vanderbilt's. She gets a $5k check every month from the family.

During that time? I'd have to do some digging. I can't think of any specific names other than FDR going to Warm Springs, GA in the 20's hoping that the waters there could cure the paralysis he suffered as a result of Polio.
I also believe it was common for people to travel out west to treat different breathing related aliments like tuberculosis. Doc Holliday is a prime example.

Tender is the Night by F Scott Fitzgerald deals with this subject. The main character is a psychologist in Switzerland that takes wealthy patients from all over the world and his facility is like a retreat center.

The Gilded Age.
The best part about these rich fricks is how clueless and tone deaf many of them became.

I've been to FDR's place in Warm Springs. Actually a pretty cool spot if you're in the area and haven't been.

Not too many Americans.
Joseph Aspdin probably made a good bit inventing Portland cement in England.
The Lafarge brothers out of France made a ton in the 1800's and it still has the most plants in the world today.

There is actually a documentary series that was done by history channel several years ago that looks into these families as well. Towards the end of the rockefeller episode, they interviewed some family at a large reunion and they said there is a small part of the family that is very wealthy today but most of them are your average people and they enjoy living like rockefellers for a couple days every few years at the reunion.

I bet my average and their averages are different levels. They aren't logging 40-50 hour work weeks for 50-60k a year like an average person. They may also portray that for security reasons too. Every 4th generation Rockefeller's are set up just nicely.

what about bill gates back in the late 90s early 2000s? the inflation adjusted total of his would have been higher than $78.3B, think the actual was more than that.
