It did not matter who was president, the Space Shuttle was a 1970s design, the original operational life was 100 launches and ten years of operation due to accumulated stress in the airframe, and other factors. The loss of two shuttles, and the delays in building the ISS caused this design parameter to be increased several times with the life extended to 20 years, but it reached the point that retirement of the spacecraft was the only safe coursed of action.

Muslim outreach plans are draining NASA's resources.

Yeah, and this pisses me off to no end that Obama told NASA that their primary concern should be to get the Middle East involved in space travel, despite the fact that NASA's long term goals directly interfere with the Middle East and really Islam at large. The frickers have loathed science since the 1100s, and it's way too late to get them on board, especially with the profit of oil and the threat of finding better material in space that can replace oil.

Here in Houston, one of the local newscasts cut to it live to close out a segment. There was some awkward silence before, "Keep in mind this is unmanned."

great, it'll be at least another 4 years until we find out how peas grow in space.

If we're doing long term space missions, I'd say this is an important one. If we could grow any food in space, that would be fricking huge. The whole gravity thing fricks with most of it, but if we can find one that is somewhat resistant to it, it could be a huge step forward. Definitely sounds like a worthwhile experiment to me.

So glad my tax dollars are hard at work

You do know that NASA's entire budget is 4/10 of a penny on the tax dollar, right? The ink that goes into the dollar is worth more than that.

The shuttles were incredibly outdated, and Bush had a plan for a new batch of shuttles by 2012. It was one of the first things Obama discarded under his administration. Really the Apollo shuttles were largely more advanced and safer than the Apollo shuttles. If Apollo 13 happened in one of our orbital shuttles, they'd be dead within the hour.

Elon Musk called this two years ago

This company literally uses Soviet engines from the 60s, not the designs of them but engines that were built in the 60s in Soviet Russia and have been chilling in a Siberian warehouse

Were these reporters trespassing or did they think it was a manned spacecraft? They are freaking out pretty bad.

Cmon man, think about it. You really think we don't currently have a space delivery for personal.

I'll bet the US alone could put a hundred people in space next week if needed.
