During the Vietnam War, there was limited use of the Lazy Dog bomb, a steel projectile shaped like a conventional bomb but only about 1" long and 3/8" diameter (essentially the size of bullets). A piece of sheet metal was folded to make the fins and welded to the rear of the projectile. These were dumped from aircraft onto enemy troops and had the same effect as a machine gun fired vertically. Observers visiting a battlefield after an attack said it looked like the ground had been 'tenderized' using a gigantic fork. Bodies had been penetrated longitudinally from shoulder to lower abdomen. This idea is similar to the concept of bullets not being fired out of a weapon, but having enough velocity to impact a human body with enough force to kill.

We think of such creative ways to kill each other...

hmmm, was any of the metal attached to these bombs, sharpened or made to slice or penetrate?
Doesn't seem possible for a falling bullet to go through half a person's body without modification like that

Doesn't seem like something that small would be heavy enough to do that much damage via nothing but gravity.

I don't see why not. It's traveling the speed of the aircraft already.

It's an exponential function. The longer it has to fall the more speed it gains. In perfect conditions that is, granted, you have wind, pressure and other factors that can determine terminal velocity, but it's going to be traveling fast enough.

With the fins, they would fall straight and wouldn't tumble. They would reach a high enough terminal velocity to be lethal. Bullets from people shooting in the air tend to tumble and not reach lethal speed, but they can kill.

They were dumped from aircraft. If streamlined, they they probably retain a significant amount of the aircraft's airspeed upon impact, i.e., they are probably moving significantly faster than their terminal velocity (about 300 fps for a bullet) when they hit.

Yeah, after googling, looks like they could get to around 500 mph... even though they were less than half and ounce each.

Basically a "cluster bomb" without the explosives.

imagine being a survivor in the target zone. Imagine just walking along and suddenly that happens...kinda spooky.

Yeah I didn't put that the best. The tumbling will make them non lethal, but on occassion they will fall just right (not tumble) and be lethal. It was on an episode of Mythbusters. They had to try for the perfect shot.

Someone doesn't understand terminal velocity...

Yeah. And isn't it weird how someone would post solely to point out their lack of understanding of it?
